Most affordable way to replace a bad S40 engine
 

First of all Hello to everyone from Sanford not far from Orlando. This is my first post but I've been reading this forum for over two years now. I may have posted under another name but can't remember it. Long story short after being a Porsche fan for years I now am addicted to Volvos. So far I've had a 85 240 SW, 96 850 SW, 96 960, 99 V70, and a totally modified 260 hp 94 850 Turbo which I am in the process of selling right now, If I still have it after the weekend it'll probably end up on Orlando Craigslist.
My issue today is that I've just bought a 2001 S40 with engine noise but my mechanic says that there is a hole in the block by number 4 cylinder and the engine is not repairable. Car has 87K, new Michelins and a nice stereo, so if I can put in a used engine for a total cost of $1200-1500 it pays for me to keep the car, if not I'll have to sell it as-is and or put it on ebay and if I can get $3000 I'll be happy..
What would you do? Any and all inputs will be appreciated.. Thanks..

Thats OK. Check with local wrecking yards. I see them on ebay every once in a while.

Check with LKQ about an engine.
The $1200 to $1500 will be about what you will pay just for the engine.

Where in Orlando are you?

I work at a shop in Winter Park.

Hello tech, Who is LKQ? My total budget for the engine is limited to about $1500, after that it doesn't pay for me to mess with it. I'd rather sell it as is and go to the next car. If I am patient I am sure I'll run into an engine I can afford.
I am in Sanford by the Airport and I am not using any shop, I am able to do most of my repairs myself but an engine swap on a car I am not familiar with is not a great idea unless I have no other choice.
I just offered someone in Craigslist $1200 for an '01 S40 wrecked in pass. rear. The ad was three weeks old, if he still has the car I may have a good shot.
Where in Winter Park are you? I have a blinking AC light (850 turbo) that needs to be reset. AC is already charged but the fan won't function. I tried disconnecting the battery but it didn't work. I don't remember doing that again after the AC charge though, maybe I'll try again tomorrow.

LKQ is one of the main junk yards around here.
There is one by Greenway ford and also on OBT.

We have spent between $1200.00 and $1500.00 I belive for motors from them. It all depends on the demand for the engine.

I work at an Indy shop about 3 to 4 miles south of the Dealer off of Orange ave on Minnesotta.

None of our scanners read A/C codes on 850's but if the lights flash and you have no blower motor then most likely the blower motor and resistor are bad.

From what I have seen motors cost between $1200-1500 and then you figure it's about $500 to do the swap. I would do it myself if I were you. The car is probably only worth about $2000-3000 with a bad motor.

You might want to check into just replacing the engine block, pistons, and crank shaft as one unit. I know I could of done this when I had to replace an engine on a Mazda 626 instead I went with a junk yard engine which was a mistake. In this particular case there was someone selling NOS engine blocks on eBay with pistons and a crankshaft. All that needed to be done was swap some parts from the existing engine: head, oil pan, new oil pump and you were ready to go. This was only about $400 compared to Japanese take out at about $1000.

Just won an engine from LKQ on ebay for $ 403.98 with the turbo and most everything still attached and with only, get this: 18K miles !!! muhahahaha !!!! lol... The catch? The friggin thing is in Oregon and will probably cost about $400 to ship.. But I am still doing ok.. God bless Ebay.

Great !! Now I'm depressed ... Anybody wanna nice 2001 S40 with a new engine in the trunk for $4000? Seriously.. I was gonna sell it after the install anyway, this way I'll get a couple of thousand less but don't have to deal with installation, setup, tune up, yada, yada, yada .....

woah woah woah my 01 s40 is in pretty good condition couple of performance mods, im pretty sure if you replace the engine you can easily get 8.5k or 9k for it no doubt...ive had offers for 9.5 even 10 but mine's inalmost perfect condition

Seriously, the engine is on the way from Oregon and will be here in about 10 days for a total cost of $753 inc. shipping.

Tech, the carfax says that the engine is from a 2000 s40 salvaged in Jan 2001, which means that the engine has been sitting idle for seven years. Anything I should watch out for?

Make sure it turns over as soon as you get it.
Also make sure all holes have caps or plugs in them.
LKQ is usually really good about sealing the engines pretty good so nothing can get in.

I am sure LKQ will seal all the holes but I don't think they have any way of knowing what happened to the car the whole time. Or do they test run the engines before they remove them from the car and test them? Should I remove the sparkplugs and spray any lubricants inside or it's not necessary? Thanks for the info.

As far as I know they test all engines before removing them.
If it turns over normally I wouldn't worry about spraying lube into it.
