New 2000 S40 1.9T Owner

Hello. Yesterday i picked up a 2000 Volvo S40 1.9T

I just have a small question. Is this turbo'ed? I've googled, thought it was then come across post and pages talking about S40's without a turbo. I'm not sure, i havent had a car in 6 years, and have NEVER worked on(or even driven) a Volvo untill yesterday.

I know what a turbo looks like, but after searching the engine bay for a little, i still cant locate if there is a turbo in this car, i assumed the T in 1.9T meant turbo, but like i said i have no Volvo experience.

Is my 2000 S40 1.9T turbo'ed? and if so, where is the turbo located in the engine bay.

Sorry for my newb question!

no problem! The S40s are described as either "Gen 1" (for the US model years 2000 to 2004) and "Gen 2" for the 2004.5 and newer. Gen 1s only came to the US with the 1.9L "light pressure turbo". Gen 2s have a selection of turbo and naturally aspirated models.

Since Volvos use transverse mounted engines (ie #1 cylinder by the passenger wheel well) the intake is on the front side facing the radiator and the exhaust is facing the cabin firewall. You will see a metal heat shield on the firewall as the exhaust and turbo throw off some heat. The turbo sits down low on that back side of the engine with some plumbing connections to actuate the waste gate (a device that regulates the amount of pressure the turbo is allowed to build up).
