New member, old S40?
New member here, just purchased a 2002 S40 for my 17yo daughters first car. Very clean although a bit concerned about the high mileage at 117k.
Had the car a week, runs well but today the check engine light came on. How concerned should I be and should I have it checked? Also there is a push button control under the headlight control that I cannot figure out, the icon on the button is not familiar, any ideas?
Thank you in advance for your advise.

This button on the bottom right? If so it's the rear Fog light button. The car has one rear fog light IIRC in the drivers side tail light. It is for better visibility (others see you better) in severe weather. The light looks a lot like a brake light but just on the one side.

Visted my local AZ this afternoon, the CEL is on and the issue number is PO128.
Definition:
coolant temp below operating range
low coolant level
Probable Cause- faulty CTS, faulty thermostat.
The AZ tech thought it might be a faulty Coolant Temperature Sensor (CTS) ??
Thank you in advance for any info you can share.

Shift lock, Not sure. All my Volvo's are manual's.
W button is for winter driving. IIRC it'll start the car in second gear and changes the shifting points of the trans.
The CEL could be as easy as coolant sensor. If it's cheap enough, you could replace it and see if that does the trick. Also make sure you top off the fluid, you could be running low.

Thank you Matt, much appreciated. Doubt the winter driving will be an issue here in Florida....
As for the CEL, had some time on the forum this afternoon and found that to be a common issue on the S40. Plan on a new thermostat which hopefully will make it go away. Will check the fluid level as well, thanks again.
