New Tires?

Apologies in advance if this topic has been covered recently, but what's your favorite set of tires to put on your s40?

I have had the original 17" Michelins since I bought the car new in 2006 but now the tires are balding pretty quickly due to their quality "grippy" nature. I'm contemplating getting basic tires that will last longer but have less performance and grip versus getting something more comparable to the Michelins, which won't last as long but will provide greater tractioning and performance.

What say you? What's worked for you? Any thoughts would be appreciated.

I went the cost cutting route and got a set of General altimax hp's
they are nice shoes. tread is eye catching and it wasn't to bad on the wallet.

RE: New Tires?

Thanks, folks, for the responses. I looked into replacing the stock tires (Michelin Pilot HX MXM4 205/50R17 95V) and they would cost me about $1,100 for a set. The cheapest I've found is all four for $900. Yikes! That's way too steep for me.

I'm looking for something that's got a good balance of traction and durability, but I'd prefer not to have to pay a grand every 2-3 years. So I'm going to check out your suggestions and let you know.

Thanks!

On tire rack they have michelin pilot all seasons for 164$, and if u want the model with 45000 mile tread warranty that will cost you 10$ more. I have these on my 01 s80 t6, the seem to wear kinda quick maybe. I've gone 20k~ on them and there is about 45% tread left. They grip the road really well, handle well and are quiet. I live on a steep hill about the size of a football field and its 55 degree angle'd hill only to get to my driveway which is at the top which is like 40 degrees. I havent gotten stuck as of yet (snow or rain), I just march right up there.

I advise againstGoodyear TripleTreads. Have them on my wifes S40 T5, great handling and traction, but against their statements-road noise is horrible and treadwear is not good even with proper rotation.

I have more than 80,000 miles on a set of Bridgestone Turanza LS-T tires on my 2004 S40. Good tire at a reasonable price.

RE: New Tires? ... an update

Thanks everyone for your replies! Just a quick update ...

I also went to Discount Tire and got myself Yokohama YK520 for $130 per tire. Same rating as the OEM Michelin (almost $200 per tire). I've only driven about 100 miles so far on them, but I like them. Smooth ride, quiet and good traction. The handling is not as great as the Michelin, so I don't recommend these YK 520 for aggressive drivers. But if you're a moderate driver, these tires are pretty good.

What sold me was the 60,000-mile warranty. If I keep my moderate driving, I'm hoping these last a lot longer than the Michelin's (which needed to be replaced after only 25,000 miles).

I'll provide another update after 500 miles or so. Thanks again!

I have had a great experience so far with the Goodyear TripleTreads. They are on our AWD Pontiac Vibe. 30,000 miles so far, very even wear, awesome traction. Keep the tires pumped up. Don't notice the noise. Also have an awesome stereo in it. LOL Tom:)
