Default Removing gasoline from gas tank 2002 s40

Hello:
I'm new here. I have a volvo 2002 s40 and need to remove all the gasoline; it is a full tank. I heard there is a way by taping the fuel relay (number 74) and opening the shreder valve. Need some advice
Thanks

Welcome to the Forum!

Ok, sounds like you already have it figured out. I would definitely accomplish this outdoors rather than an enclosed garage. Any sparks from the fuel relay and an open source of fuel could be really bad. A proper fire extinguisher also.

The shrader valve might be a problem unless you unscrew the center valve stem. Looks like a simple valve stem remover would do the trick. You could also remove the fuel feed line from the fuel pressure regulator then slip a bigger ID hose over the fuel feed. Run that hose straight to another vehicle with an empty tank. I bet it would be faster than the shrader valve too.

The fuel regulator; I did not think of that! . If you could show me how, I would appreciate it. I have the vehicle outside by the driveway and is safe to work.
The reason I'm doing this is because the car one day just stopped working while driving. Had a nasty oil leak for a long time but i kept on driving it (added oil all the time though). it has 220000 miles and checked the timing belt and is still there intact but i think it jumped slightly, cranks but does not turn. (belts were oily ) . I think removing the engine might be the best choice. Like the car very much, and what a predicament!!! Thanks for your reply

Oh my, the memories you bring back. My 2001 did the exact same thing. The oil leak was from the CVVT gear and the timing belt jumped enough teeth to bend all 8 exhaust valves. The fix was to order all the parts online, remove the head and replace/lap the valves (seals, etc), carefully clean the pistons and block, then put it back together with new head bolts. Plus I had to replace the CVVT gear and all associated timing belt pieces. I even changed the water pump although it was perfect when I inspected it.

The valve replacement is straight forward. The big gotcha was the CVVT gear. It's not keyed so it can be installed in the wrong clock position. The easiest, but not cheapest, solution is to buy the Volvo cam holder tool. This positions both cams properly to install the CVVT gear with the timing mark aligned. The intake cam gear only fits one way IIRC.

Here is a pic of the CVVT gear. The little plunger is where mine was leaking:

Here is the damage. See the two oval bright areas on the left side of the piston? That's where the exhaust valves hit the piston.
