think air, fuel, spark here. Most likely causes are 1) weak spark (check plugs/wires/connectors to the coils). Any check engine codes for misfires? 2) fuel and air need to be a correct mix. Any intake air leaks - ie torn boots/vaccuum lines? any signs of an exhaust leak? (S40s often have issues with the flex pipe ahead of the cat - you can hear it from under the car) After that, it could be failed component but futher testing would be required - is the fuel pressure ok? does the behavior change as the engine warms or does the temp gauge wander (suggesting a coolant temp sensor issue)? Other volvos models have issues with the electronic throttle mechanism - but afaik, that's not an issue with the Gen1 S40s.
Common S40 issues can include 1) fuel pressure regulators (usually cause long cold cranking) 2) wire harness to the coils / old plug wires ' old or incorrect plugs 3) engine coolant temp sensor issues 4) intake air leaks (anything rubber can tear) 5) exhaust leak at the flex pipe 6) other miscellaneous engine management sensors like O2 sensors etc can fail but usually throw a check engine code.
