S40 speaker question
I have a volvo s40 with factory head unit and it has 6 speakers everything is factory. So I want to change everything out and I dont understand weather front two 2" speakers are tweeters or just a random little speaker. I found a diagram for my Head unit wireing and it appears the wireing only goes to rear speakers and front door speakers, but what about front ones? Are they actually tweeters and there is a hidden crossover there which I dont see? I have taken most of dash apart and I Havent seen a crossover. Or is those little speakers just spliced in somewhere in middle of front speaker wire and they are just small 2" speakers not really tweeter?

In my case there is nothing there, my Volvo has 6 speakers 2 in rear, 2 in front doors and 2 in front dashboard, they might be tweeters and might not be. So basically my question is should I add a tweeter to that slot directly or run it thru crossover from front door speakers? My guess is that they are not tweeters and are just tiny speakers in front that are somehow spliced in with front speakers. Basically what I'm trying to say is that I have no clue how they are connected to the factory HU and if they would work after buying aftermarket HU.
Ok, you have the previous generation S40. What year? It matters because they have different harness adapters.
The tweeters are connected in parallel with the front door speakers. For a crossover, there are just using a capacitor located at the tweeter. They will work with an aftermarket head unit.
If your factory head unit model is HU-xxx, the Metra 70-9221 (for the 1999 and up S80 harness) fits the mid 2001 - 2004 S40/V40 harness and Metra 40-VL10 for the antenna.
If your factory head unit is SC-xxx, there is a different adapter which is the same as the older S70/V70 and others. I think this was only used in the 2000- early 2001 S40/V40
Back when I had my '02 S40, I did a completer sound system with Alpine head unit, CD changer, external amps for front and rear and sub. I ran all new speaker wires but you don't have to.
The front doors have a weird bump in the area where the speaker mounts. If your factory speakers are metal frame glued to a plastic adapter, you can remove the plastic adapter and use it to mount aftermarket speakers. If the factory speakers are all molded plastic like mine were, you will need to get creative. I got some MDF and made adapter rings with a notch to accommodate the hump. BTY, the doors are 5.25" speakers. I had gone with MB Quarts. My son has an '01 S40 and is running Polk Audio.
I had popped the factory tweeters out of their mounting plates and mounted the MB Quart component tweeters in the plates so they snapped right in place.
The hat shelf (rear speakers) are 5.25" in most of the Gen 1 S40's. I think they switch to 6.5" in 2003 or 2004. In either case, you can mount 6.5" with an adapter ring.

From your head unit (or amp) run wires from the speaker output to the aftermarket crossover input. Run separate wires from the crossover tweeter output to the tweeters in the dash and don't use the factory capacitor, just leave the factory tweeter harness disconnected. For the woofers, you could run new wires from the crossover woofer output to the woofers. Or you can simply connect the factory wire to the crossover woofer output and connect the woofer to the factory wire harness in the doors.
