Starting problem
 

My car (2000 S40) will start right away when it’s cold, but if car is warm it cranks a lot before it turns over.

If I turn it off and on right away it will start with no problem, but if I wait a few minutes and then try it again it will crank before it starts.

I replaced the sparks and coils. It fixed engine misfire, but not starting problem.

Any ideas?

I had the same problem. Mine turned out to be my fuel pressure regulator. It cost me about $250 to fix at the dealer but now works fine. Do u a CEL on?

When it acts up hot before trying to start it turn the key on and off a couple of times before cranking and see if it starts faster.

How about this. Now my S40 takes awhile to start up when the engines cold, and after cranking up the RPM stablizes at about 500rpm for about 15 secs with the CEL on, and goes to normal idle RPM and the light goes off.

No problems starting up when the engine's warm though.

You may need a throttle body cleaning but I have a feeling its your fuel pressure regulator based on the symptoms. My light came on and off as well but eventually just stayed off for some reason? But hook up a gauge to check if your fuel pressure drops..

Let me know what happens??

Bad fuel pressure regulator or Fuel pump.
Try regulator first.
Then fuel pump. The pump have a check valve internally and after time the check valve goes bad thus loosing pressure when car isn't running.

The throttle body is easy to clean.
Follow the one big hose to the engine and that is the throttle body.
You can remove the hose and clean it on the car.
Or you can remove it and buy a new gasket and clean it good and reinstall it.

I just removed the big thick rubber semicircle hose from top of the radiator to the engine. Everything is clean on both sides.

the small hose that is on the fuel pressure regulator the goes sraight down the to intake, you can take that off and see if it is wet with fuel, or smells of gas really bad, it takes about 1minute to check and 2min to replace..
very simple check and replace

I have the same problem with my S60 volvo - 2002. can you tell me where I find this fuel pressure regulator on my engine ?

Not sure on the S60. On the S40 it's located at the end of the fuel rail under the plastic beauty cover. Here is a pic of the S40. The red circle is where the fuel line connects to the FPR. The FPR is the black plastic thing attached to the aluminum fuel rail.

can the FRP be cleaned or does it need to be replaced?

It's a replacement item as of right now. The problem is the diaphram inside the FPR which ruptures and allows pressure to equalize which disables it's function of regulating pressure. On some cars you simply buy a new diaphram and replace it but on our cars I have only been able to find the whole thing. The dealer price and the online price with shipping works out to be close.

Just underneath the fpr there is a little rubber hose shaped like a u, on my 2001 s40 it's cracked , would that have anything to do with fuel pressure? Come to think of it I think it's part of the fpr, is that right? So I guess I would have to change the whole piece? Thanks.
