Unsolveable Shimmy & Vibration Issue

Hello everyone!

Strange issue I'm encountering on my 2000 S40 that I'm kind of stumped on, and was hoping to get your advice. The problem is a shimmy/vibration that oscillates from left to right starting around 65MPH, and does not go away or get worse as speed increases. I got new rims and tires and the problem has only recently gotten worse Here's what I've tackled so far:

  • Hubcentric rings
  • Balanced wheels/tires
  • New CV axles on both front driver's & passenger's side (right side had torn boot, so I replaced both while I was at it)
  • Replaced bearings on both front right and front left side --> this is what improved the shimmy the most, but it's still pretty bad vibration and you can notice the steering wheel and dash shaking above 65MPH.
I'm not really sure what's left to tackle. I figure that some rotating assembly is causing the issue, but frankly I'm running out of ideas. Anyone have any clues?

Many thanks in advance!

Figured it out!

So... apparently unbeknownst to me fix-a-flat was used on one of the wheels and that wheel, once I rotated it to rear, has stopped causing major issues.

For future reference, I would say (in order of biggest effect to lowest effect) that the following all had some part in decreasing the vibration (which is now 90% gone!... I'll have to update this again once I change the rear tire and replace some suspension components... just looking for a used one that has the same amount of tread now :)

  • Hub/centric rings & spline lug nuts
  • Wheel balance
  • Wheel bearings
  • New tires/rotating problematic tire to rear
  • CV Axles (although least effective in reducing vibration, it did improve my cornering feel and got rid of an annoying clunking noise!
Shimmy solved
