Default vct2000

I was wondering if i really need this thing. I basically want to monitor the condition of the car via laptop and an obd2 to serial cable. Will it work alone or the vct2000 is necessary? If it is necessary is there anything cheaper in the market? Because vct2000 costs sevaral thousand $$$$ and i am not rich!

I have autotap setup on my laptop that I bought with all the ford codes for my 1998 mustang. I use it on my Mazda Protege5 but doesn't get the enhanced codes. Did the same on the 2004 S60 wife had & expect the S40 to be same, just basic monitoring & DTC code retrieval/clearing. It has a recording function where you can drive around & save readings. It does text spreadsheet or dash mode with analog or digital gauges. It hooks up USB but they have serial & others. Is this what the vct thing does?

Pretty much the same thing. But the VCT 2000 will also let you activate things,Perform fuel tank tests ETC.

If you are looking for the diagnostic tool to go with the newer VIDA software check this out. Wholesale 2012 newest car scanner tool volvo vida dice

And I'm flying to Guangzhou in the morning. Too bad I can't run over to the factory and pick one up. Probably best if I ordered it online like everyone else. Chinese security would have a cow if I showed up with that in my suitcase.
