Volvo S40 Year 2005 Boot won't open

I have a Volvo S40 year 2005 that has suddenly developed a problem. The boot won't just open. And i don't see any other way of opening it. Any one with any idea how i can resolve this?

Note: The glove compartment is not locked so it cannot be the valet issue.

just had the same fault - the wiring harness was u/s. go in thru the rear seats and remove trim from boot lid, remove plug from lock, there are 4 pins in lock motor - counting from the left apply 12 volts to pin 1 and pin3 to unlock the boot. remove the outside handle and unplug it carefully . my harness had two broken wires -price for a new one £33 inc vat.

I took my car to the dealership and they confirmed the Wiring Harness had some broken wires. Fortunately they managed to rejoin the broken wires as a temporary measure, but will have to replace the Wiring Harness.

My trunk button stopped working too. I followed this thread and replaced the trunk wiring harness in my 2006 s40 and it now works. Cost me about $55 shipped from online and 45-60 minutes time. Bet it would have cost about $300 at the dealer total. Thanks. I did disconnect the battery before removal and the reconnected after install of the new harness.
