whats involved in an engine replacement?

i need to replace the engine in my s40, ran without oil so engine is knocking bad and is shot so how involved is it?

car has 174k miles so im thinking it would be best to just swap the entire engine tranny front end setup if it comes out as one unit

is it that easy where the whole front engine craddle comes as a complete unit? or does the front end not come out with it?

thanks for your help

what year is your S40 and what kind of tools do you have access to?

donor car with good 57k mile engine is in 2008 s40 with 2.4i engine and the car with bad engine is a 2007 s40 with 2.4i engine that has 174k miles on it

im wanting/hoping to swap it all, engine, tranny, and whole front end assmbly as one unit if it comes out that way

do these cars have a k frame that drops the whole assembly as one unit?

is there any reason things wont match from 2008 to 2007 car?

i will be getting someone to do the work for me if it can be done

the 07 was a donor car to get a whole front clip to fix accident damage but the body shop guy said it will be a hell of a lot cheaper to switch engines instead

the 08 needs everything from windshield forward replaced including radiator core support, it submarined a minivan so it got hit high at headlight level so there was no frame damage at all

Engine swaps are easy. Realistically, you are talking about 1 day of work, whether you drop the frame or just pull the engine alone. I don't know anything about year-over-year changes on the S40, so I don't know how much incompatibility, if any, you'll get into.

check the engine codes - most likely they are both B5244S5s which were in the S40s from 04 to 10. The car with the engine already in should have that on a build plate and the VIN should have a 66 in the 6/7th digits. For the engine out of the car, look for a sticker on the timing cover and a stamping on the exhaust side of the head by #1. Should be plug and play if the numbers line up.

thanks, both are still in the car

i bought a parts car to swap the whole front cap after an accident and the body shop guy said just swap engines and its a whole lot cheaper since the only thing wrong with the parts car is the bad engine knock and a few parking lot door dings

well we are talking about 174k miles on everything else so im planing to get everything swaped in from the 57k mile good engine car

no way does it make sense not to swap everything with that many miles on it

just wasnt sure how it got done and i saw some stuff on TV where some cars the whole front assembly unbolts from the frame and comes out with the engine as one unit after disconnecting to top struts from the car.

so you are saying that yes thats how volvos are too? the whole assembly can come out as one unit?

ES6T 01-15-2019 12:31 PM

No, that is not how these engines come out. The engine and transmission are dropped together out the bottom.

after getting prices we decided to not swap engines, engine swap price was $1000 which isnt bad but the differences in book values after they were fixed was $2300 so we will go ahead and fix the red 08 one and send whats left of the blue 07 one with the bad engine to the scrap heap

when you figure the difference in value when finished, the red 08 one costs us $3000 to fix vs paying the $1000 engine swap price, plus the $600 to buy the 07 car which has a $2000 lower blue book value plus 174k miles

if both were fixed and in good condition, the 08 book value is $6300 and the 07 book value is only $4000 so it was a no brainer to fix the red one since there was virtually no value saved by swapping engines. when its all said and done it would work out to the same amount of money either way we went

now i just have to be her personal uber driver for 2 more weeks while they fix it lol
