I recently tested out my gas mileage to see how much I could squeeze out of a full tank. Let me say ahead of time I drove like a grandma, took off from stop lights slowly and never went more than 5 miles over the speed limits, whether on highways or around town. When approaching red lights I would coast to them as much as was reasonable. This was completely outside of my normal style of driving, but I wanted to get the best mileage I could.

My results: with combined city and highway driving my car gave me a surprising 524.4 miles from 15.9 gallons of gas! That's an average of 32.9811321 miles per gallon. I've had a few European vehicles (2 BMWs, Mercedes, 2 Jaguars), and a couple Japanese (Lexus, 2 Nissans), but have never gotten anywhere near this gas mileage. Gotta say, I was quite impressed.

Again, my driving style was very conservative to get the best mileage I could. Normally, I average about 465 miles or so out of one tank. My intention was to see if I could get to 500. Never thought I'd blow past it so far, though.

My best is 32 mpg on a 2001 cruising on the interstate only.

 

I can get 38 MPG driving under 70 on the highway (hilly road) on my 2003 S40. I average about 28 MPG highway / city which is the best I have ever gotton on any Volvo.
