Wheel hub repacement
 

Fond a mechanic that charges $50/hr who works on volvo.

I was talking to him and he said to change the wheel hub assembly, it will cost $150 for labor. Can that be true for one side he will charge 3 hours?

He got technical ans said 'well i have to press it in etc..

Anyone agree with him?

yes, pressed in, sounds like a deal.

Wow I didnt know it took that long. What does pressing mean?

Could I do it myself without any special tool?

Probably not, it takes special tools. You have to first have a hydraulic press, then all the bushings for the hub to push out and in.

For the 2005 S40, the whole thng comes with the hub assmbly.

The dealership calls it wheel hub assebly bearing and it costs about $210 for one hub assembly (front).

I was under the impression that if I'm only changing the bearing then I need the press thingy but if I am replacing te whole hub assembly, I dont need any special tools?

Are you buying it installed, that means your buying the knuckle as well ??? I dont know of a separate bearing being serviceable.

Yea, that's what I thought. In FL? well, when your replacing that, you need other special tools as well, 1. to get the strut out of the knuckle, a little bar we use. 2. to remove the ball joint and tie rod from there place, may be able to borrow it from auto store. Then you press it out with others tools. Its up to you.

Yes, that's what I thought.You need other special tools and the first to strut on the rod, a small bar that we use. Remove the second ball joints and the actuator rod and place may be able to borrow from the automotive shop. Then you can print it with other tools.Now all depends on you.

On youtube do a search for 'changing wheel bearing' you'll come up with some good and funny ones. They were not specific to volvo's

I got in touch with a volvo mechanic and he charged me $50/hr to put both bearings. He got the bearings for $170 (price is $210) a piece since he works at the dealership. He charged me i believe 2 hours per side and while he was in there ,I had him put new rotors and pads.

I'm having him change my rear O2 sensor in a couple of weeks and also some pulleys which have rusted and make a horrible noise when i start/drive the car. He has to find out whch pulley it is. Not bad when he charges $50/hr.

Are you talking for a wheel hub assembly replacement or just the wheel bearing itself.
I don't think for the wheel hub you need any press. The bearing is already pressed in .
You are taking the tire off, taking the caliper and rotor off. There are 4 bolts holding the wheel hub and the hub is free.
That how it is on my S70. I believe the S40 is similar.
