Unhappy Whistling sound

Hi guys, I have this weird whistling sound coming from the front of the car when it’s under a load or when you goose the throttle … I just replaced the serpentine belts they need it and I thought they might be the problem. NOT… My next thought was maybe it’s an exhaust leak because I can smell exhaust under the hood. There is no leak from the turbo back I had a friend that works for a Monro test the system and he found nothing. I’m afraid that it’s coming from the turbo. Oh and i almost forgot the CEL came on yesterday. I haven't had the code pulled yet but i will.

Any suggestions???

As great as a new turbo sounds.... It's not at all in the budget.

I would pull the codes first since you have that and go from there! It will make it a little easier, since the car is sight unseen!

There is a problem that crops up on the 2004.5 and up S40/V50 involving the crank case breather box and causes a nasty whistle/screech. Though as I recall, it is present at idle and goes away when you open the throttle.

For what you are describing, I'd check the vacuum lines.

Not familiar with these codes but after some google I find ppl are talking about the EVAP system.I had a whistling noise once it was caused by a half way clogged up catalytic converter.It even sounded good but the CAT had to go anyway.

That is probably the breather box. Volvo actually extended the warranty for that item.

Well all I can say is the video was made with the CAT on then soon as it was removed the whistling was gone too.
Clogged CAT robbed a great deal of power too.Guess we dont know what kinda sound hes getting perhaps he could post a sample or something but the codes probably in there because of the EVAP so there is something to look around there..

Well thanks Guys. I broke down and it is at the dealer now. I can't imagine that it would be the Cat because that was replaced when i go the down pipe back around March.

I just got the call from the dealer.... It's coming from the turbo. F***K!!

Really! Do you have any warranty left?

Did they say that the problem is the turbo or could it be a leak in the intake plumbing?

No they said it's coming from the turbo. It's still working but on the way out. I have an extended warranty but with the aftermarket stuff i have he has to check with his manager to see if they will cover it. Fingers crossed!!

If not I guess im in the market for a bigger turbo... Any suggestions?

Dude, 19t,and a tune! Lol............... If it's the turbo, shop around because you know they are going to jack up the price...

These cars have the turbo integrated into the exhaust manifold. I have only seen one upgrade turbo.

It says it is for the C30 but it is the same engine.

Man that would be nice!!! I'm gonna hope it's covered by the warranty though. I just don't have an extra 3K to put in the car at this point. My wife's Saturn Vue has to go!! That thing is the biggest P.O.S. I have ever owned. The CVT trans has been replaced three times now and its about to go again.

Yah I agree somethnfrce up grade would be nice!! They quoted $1900.00 that's still a lot less than an upgrade ($32..k parts alone) and I'm guessing I would need a new intercooler also.
I'm going to fight the good fight with the dealer and see if I can get anywhere. I'll keep you guys up to speed as I hear things.

Yah that will be the next step. I talked with the service manager than I'll move to the dealer GM. They seam like they want to be helpful. **** they all complemented my car when I picked it up.

Yes, but sometimes the compliments redirect your attitude onto something else.... I would just skip the GM and call Volvo. How far out of warranty are you? I forget what year your S is?
