My S60 has a mild "shudder" in reverse, not bad - however not smooth. It seems more noticeable when backing up a hill, on the flat it is smooth.

Not to my knowledge. The car is a 2001, lease return with 40K miles, we bought it through a Volvo dealer in Sacramento. Could a software update for the tranny cause or fix this?

50/50 that the software will fix it.

They have had many problems with the transmissions and software fixed it.

check and adjust motor mounts
specifically the top and transmission mounts
