'03 S60 with P2111

Hi folks,

'03 S60 awd (2.5t) 170km threw up a P2111 on start up Saturday and engine stayed in limp mode. Inspected the throttle body in situ and it appears to be relatively clean and moves fine, half assed cleaned the outside while I was at it. It's a used unit that my mechanic installed a couple of years ago.

Disconnected the battery shorted out the cables (not the battery) for a few minutes, fired it up and it was fine for a short drive. Took it home and it threw up the same code and limp mode on next start. Repeated the cable trick and re-cleared the code with a scanner app and so far so good (4-5 short trips).

Am I living on borrowed time? New TB inevitable?

There was talk of a throttle body sticky in some other threads but I haven't found it yet, just the cleaning instructions.

Thanks for listening.

Did you push the throttle plate to see how it looks on the other side? Most dirt sits on the engine side.

As well as I could without removing it, which I admit wasn't complete. The inside was certainly dirtier but not really bad. I cleaned it as well as I could while holding the butterfly open.

I assumed (perhaps incorrectly) that if the OBD code says "stuck open" that the primary issue isn't that not closing improperly 'cause of dirt?

Update: dealer service manager suspects (based on my description and the 170km on the clock) that the real issue is the PCV valve. Plugged PCV puts oil into the throttle body which leads to sticking. There was some oil in the upper turbo hose when I removed it.

He suggested a crank case pressure test, negative pressure is good, positive means blockage. My poor mans versions (disposable glove over dipstick hole) tells me there's negative pressure so I'm still looking for the root problem.

Hello mcewena, did you ever get this resolved? If so, please share.

Thanks!

Well resolved is probably too strong a term but it went away ;)

I cleaned the TB as best I could without removing it and cleared the code twice and it hasn't done it since. It could well happen again tomorrow.

I have a 2002 V70 XC Turbo with a BOSCH ETM and 180,000 miles. What you described above is exactly what I have been dealing with. In late July, while driving 200 miles to NYC, I stopped at a rest stop. When I started the car to leave, it was in reduced performance mode. I tried driving it, but as I am sure you know. You can't. I shut it down and started to try to figure out what was wrong. After about 10 minutes, I started it and it ran fine.
It did this about once every week from that point on. I think I went a month at some point where it did not do this. Now, it does it 8 out of 10 times I start the car. I now have an OBDII device that I use to clear the faults so I can continue to drive the car.

It is throwing fault code P2111, that is how I found this thread.

I have done the following in an attempt to fix this issue:
1) Cleaned and inspected the ETM (BOSCH not Magneti Marelli) by removing it. Mechanically, it is in really good condition. I did notice when I removed it that there was oil residue in it. One of the bolt bores was full of oil. I don't know if this is normal.
2) Tested and replaced the MAF sensor
3) New spark plugs

If anyone has any ideas on what would be the best direction at this point.
