'04 S60R to total or not to total, that is the question

Here's our situation: our '04 S60R (which we just put new suspension in, etc. etc.) got hit in a parking lot and is just on the line to be totaled by his insurance. They will let us keep the car but with a salvage title. He damaged both passenger doors, the rear quarter panel in front of the wheel, and the rear wheel. (Photo attached.)

It has 144k miles on it. The decision we need to make is to keep it with a salvage title or take the settlement. Would anyone here have any idea what it might be worth as a salvage titled car / donor car / you fix it car? We need to make a decision soon. It's in St. Louis. Thank you!!!

depends on the damage and what you want out of the car. If the floor pan is straight (so as to not mess up the rear wheel's alignment) and the door opens, then you have a driveable car. If you want to fix it to sell, then you'd need to price out replacement doors and body work to fix the quarter panel. Given its an R model it will have some resale value but may be worth more as a keeper.

Thank you. The front door opens but not the back, and the wheel is out of line. Not sure about the floor pan. I guess I need to try to learn what it's worth as is to anyone else. My son doesn't want to fix it because he's about to get my C30 for free and I'm getting a '69 GMC truck. It's a long story...

I can't imagine that you would get more then perhaps $2k for it given its age and miles. Its amazing how much our Volvo's depreciate over just a few years. You should be able to find a rear door etc at a local salvage yard in and around St Louis without too much trouble. If you can get someone to make the repair and if that rear wheel can be fixed to track properly then you could continue driving it. Always a tough decision, especially since you just put a significant amount into the suspension.

Agreed! Thank you for your thoughts. I think he's leaning toward taking the total $$.

Did you total it out?

I would be interested in parts off the car or whole car depending on the price?

Hi Mike,
We got the paperwork today to total it but haven't mailed it back. At this point I'd have to say if you want it it's $1,800 as-is-where-is and I need to know in 24 hours because they have drug their feet to get us our settlement. It's in an impound lot in St. Louis. Also, we'll need to use an escrow account or something. I can't take the chance that you're going to change your mind and then I've got a car I have to tow and try to sell. Please let me know soon! Thank you.
Jill
