Exclamation 2001 T5 fires then dies...will not start/run

Hi all,

My partners 2001 T5 S60 has been running like a dream until she went to start it this morning where the motor caught and then dies immediately. She drove the car home perfectly well last night so I'm very surprised.

When u turn the key it starts then stops. I tried again this afternoon and used throttle on starting and again it started perfectly well and actually revved for about 1/2 sec then died again.

If I hold some throttle on while starting it catches then the motor just cranks over but will not start.

I'm suspecting a failed fuel pump as it seems pretty quiet at the back of the car where normally you hear the pump.

Any other suggestions? I've checked all fuses (especially the one for the fuel pump) and found none blown.

Cheers
Homer

Is there a message in the display window that says "start prevention try again"?

It is possible it is a bad fuel pump. When it will not start check for fuel. On the end of the fuel rail there is a valve almost like a tire valve. Press the center in and see if there is pressure or not. If the pump is not working then you might dribble a few drops out. If it is working then alot will come out.

Also try turning the key 180 and try starting again. If that works the antenna ring might be bad.(light around ignition switch)

Yep I've tried the fuel valve on the end of the rail and fuel comes out but it doesn't shoot across the car, it dribbles out just like if the tap is turned on in in your house a little bit.

Ok then fuel pump or fuel pump relay switch? Where are they and how can I check?

Cheers

Well easiest way would be to find a fuel pressure guage first. If not pressure shows up then check wiring under rear seat on drivers side.

Hi Tech,

No joy so i got the car towed to the mechanics where he tried to start it a couple of times, it ran then sounded like it was going to die so he just kept turning the key, where upon it started and ran perfectly. I might add that he used the second key (which we'd already tried without sucess)

Immobiliser message was in the window then cleared. I drove it a couple of times now it has died again. When the 1st key was used the car fired then died again. Now upon trying both keys the car once again is stuffed.

What can we do?????

Bloody Volvo's!

First thing I would try is the antenna ring for the key.(Light around ignition) You can change that your self. Also if it will not start one time remove the key and turn it 180 and try it again.

Very easy to replace. The top steering column cover just pops up. Then there is some screws from the bottom and the cover will come off. Unplug the light and slide it off the ignition switch and replace.

Got the bugger going.......Even though it said 120Km till empty and was showing above the red section in the guage I put some more petrol in and got it going. I live on a hill and it must have been enough to stop the fuel going into the lines......

The car was parked nose downhill and the passenger (left side from behind, RHD car) side lower than drivers.

I am quite embarrassed!!

the estimate to empty is just that, an estimate. i would never let it drop below 1/4 tank.
