2003 S60 shutting off

Hey guys,

I was reading in previous posts about other S60's with the engine cutting off when the engine is idling. Same thing is happening to my 03 S60.

I had the throttle body cleaned out and it cured this issue temporarily but is still cutting off.

There is no trend to when it is going to die. Sometimes I am turning left, sometimes right, other times, I am drifting in neutral and others I have the clutch to the floor and still in gear. Always at low speeds-thank god...

It only seems to happen when the air conditioning compressor is on though. Not sure if this has anything to do with it.

I was reading that too on this site that one guy had had the MAP sensor replaced. Has your S60 cut off since then?

Some details about the car is that it is a 5 speed with the standard 5 "banger" engine (no turbo) with approx. 55,000 miles.

So, if anyone reading this had had similar problems and wouldn't mind providing some advice on what you did, much would be appreciated it!!!!

Any codes stored in the computer?

Could be a bad Mass Flow sensor or a fuel pump problem.

Donnie- Just ran across your post. My car has the same issue. Random engine cut off. This has got to be some kind of electrical issue because 10 minutes later, my car is just fine. I got no codes either, just my middle finger when it happens!

I took the car back to Volvo dealership a while back when the car was cutting off on a regular basis after the throttle body had been cleaned.

This time they replaced the fuel pressure sensor.
This was two weeks ago and only cut off once since then....same symptoms, air conditioning compressor running, clutch to the floor, in gear and drifting up to a stop sign...cut right off.

About a week later, I got a letter from Volvo stating that there is now an "Important Extended Warranty Notice" about this called Extended Warranty Program P46.

Basically says they will replace the Oxygen Sensor, Mass Air Flow Sensor and/or check on the Evaporative Emissions System.

So, who the heck knows........
As long as it doesn't cutoff at interstate speeds.

Donnie,
Can I ask you how you went about getting service done? Did you call Volvo North America or did you just pull up on the dealers doorstep? Have you had to pay out money for work done?
Sounds like the Electronic Throttle M was a bad idea for Volvo.Come to think of it, the throttlepedal is kind of strange in the wayworks & feels. If it ain't broke...don't fix it! My 850T is a dream, I'll takeold school cables any day. Problem with electronics is they're not always easy to diagnose. A broken wire, a missing spring, a worn part, these are all things you can physically see and adjust,...a 5cent bad transistor may never be traced back.
Sorry, I'm "preaching to the choir"...
