Default 2004 S6 Transmission failure

Transmission failure:
My S60 2.4 2004/ 204 K miles transmission failed. I was driving it back home and got about 5 miles when the car started to slow. The engine was running just fine but it was loading down. Then the transmission failure message came up, and then there was a loud bang. I turned the car around and drove it back to work some five miles. I was going nearly 20 miles an hour with the gas peddle near to the floor. The transmission seemed to be in two gears at the same time. Does anyone have any ideas what could of happened.

did you get any fault codes - ie blinking ABS / TRACs lights, check engine lights etc? First thing to do would be to have the car scanned for any codes stored by the transmission. Second task would be to check the transmission fluid level and color - black would indicate the wet clutches are burnt leading to slippage a normal color. After that, I'd suspect either a sensor or perhaps the solenoids/valve body is acting up. (you have a computer controlled transmission which shifts gears by actuating solenoid switches to route fluid and shift the gears. If that's not happening correctly you should get a fault code from the transmission computer).
