Hi members, GlennB ftom the U.S. with a question on a key fob for my 2012 S60 T5. I loaned it to my son. He dropped a key fob in the water. Fried it. I called the dealer. They wanted 500 dollars for a new fob and to program it. Can I get a key fob for it and program it? I only have the one left and if I loose it or whatever I am screwed. What can I do, by myself to fix this. Without the dealer robbing me blind. Any and all suggestions would be gratefull. I really really like this car. Its very clean, taken care of. Thank you all for suggestions. GlennB

Have you tried the water logged key to see if it will still start the car? I would imagine the remote portion to lock and unlock the doors no longer works - but the "start function" (with the key inserted) does not rely on a battery or electronics. There is a physical emergency key stored in the remote that can be used to lock and unlock the car.
If you purchase "a key fob for it and program it" you will have to use what the Volvo dealer uses. That's a Vida subscription to tell the car to accept the signal from the remote and the chip in the key portion. You might find that dealers will not want to attempt to "program" your Ebay sourced remote if you purchase one offered there.
You could reuse your emergency key and save a little on the replacement cost.

Hoonk, I cant thank you enough for your reply. But my son, who doesnt think, AT ALL. Threw the key away in the garbage. He was afraid to tell me. Once the Doors wouldnt operate that was good enough for him. Sad part was, I waved at the garbage guy today as hes was dumping the can in the truck. Little did I know, there went the key. Lol Thanks again my friend.
