Default 2013 S60 Consuming Oil

I received an error message the other day as I was driving down the ramps of a parking structure in my 2013 S60. "NO OIL PRESSURE. PLEASE STOP SAFELY" came on for about 1 second and went off. I contacted my dealer who suggested checking the oil. I'm right at the 5000 mile mark since my last service. After letting the car sit for an hour, the dipstick didn't register anything. I added 2 quarts to get levels back up. The bad thing is that I added a quart and a half about a month ago (about 1000 miles) when I last checked the oil. I don't see any oil leaking anywhere on my driveway or parking spot at work.

I'm taking it in for diagnosis this week. Does it seem reasonable that the Piston O-rings would be going? I'm worried that it might cost $7-9k to fix (per the dealer). The car only has 50,000 miles and is 10 months out or warranty. Thanks!

Yes, it's unreasonable to be consuming so much oil on a 4-5 year old engine with 50K miles. Please do post what you find.

Is your 2013 S60 still under warranty.

The warranty expired in the beginning of April at about 42k miles. I noticed something at about 49k, and added 2qts and then again as it just passed 50k miles and added 3 qts.

You should be able to get some good will from the dealer that serviced your Volvo while it was under warranty.

I suggest you take it to your dealer and have them check and document the oil consumption, and go from there.

The dealer inspected the car and did not find a problem with the PCV. They said they updated the software to calibrate things, topped off the oil and told me to drive for awhile and monitor consumption. They told me to not add any oil if it gets far enough that the NO OIL PRESSURE light comes on again, just stop driving and have it towed to Volvo. Then they will dig deeper into the engine. Is this a decent course of action?

I'd say it's the right course of action.

What brand oil are you using when you change the oil/top off?

I had to use Mobil 1 5W30 Synthetic when I had to add more. The dealer topped off, so i'm assuming they used Castrol 5w3o which is recommended in the manual.

Mobile 1 does not meet ACEA A5/B5 oil specifications. See page 346 of your Owners Manual.

Castrol meets the specs.

WOw that is a crap load of oil! Might I suggest buying a set of $30 ramps and taking a look underneath for yourself. You may need to take the splash guard off the inspect but that is pretty straightforward. The topside of the splash guard may give you some indication of where the oil is coming from. Otherwise look for wet spots anywhere you have viewing access. Should be pretty easy to find the root cause. That or your exhaust will be totally blue and you will know where the oil is going....

Here's an update. Its been 500 miles since they toped off oil and updated the ECM. Oil levels still seem to be at full. I'll check again at 1000 miles and bring it in to the dealer to eyeball as well. Still unclear how updating software can solve an oil consumption problem.

I suspect that whoever did the first oil change did not completely fill the engine. So, you probably lost a quart in 5000 miles and it appeared to be more.

I found this on a site:
by upgrading the software to tolerate lower oil volumes before displaying a warning message, and installing new dipsticks that read lower volumes as acceptable levels – Volvo has opted to shoot the messengers, rather than work the problem.
here’s a link to the technical journal that defines the issue and the steps the dealers should take.

I had an S80 that was ultra sensitive to oil level. It was the 3.2. If it was 1/2 quart or less off, it would throw the warning.

Thanks PYRO, does this apply to the 2013 S60 or 2012?

I hit 1000 miles since bringing it in last month and promptly went back to the dealer this morning. Checked the oil before leaving and I was now down 2 "XX" marks (out of 5) on the dipstick. How much oil is that?
Volvo put me in a loaner and is going to dig deeper now. Hopefully VCNA will step up.

I am a new member and joined because I am having a similar issue as this thread. Not sure if I should discuss my 2013 S60 excessive oil consumption problem here or start my own thread? I checked my VIN and my engine is a B5254T12. Thanks alot!
