Default Brake Light failure

Has anyone experience a problem with the brake lights failing repeatedly. I went to change the bulb, and noticed immediately that the old bulb was way hotter than it should be. I replaced the bulb and while I was testing out the new bulb it burned out as well. I have scheduled a service appt. for my 01 2.4t. But would like to know what might be causing this.

Well it is back from the dealer after the 22,500 mile service. The dealer tells me that you have to replace all bulbs in that circuit at once. So they just replaced every bulb to be found in the back of the car and they work just fine.

Your are better off that way or you will replace 1 and then another a day or so later then again and again.

Hey tech,
So we got the brake light failure message and took it to the dealership and they replaced the bulbs but they said for them to work some computer module needs to be reset or replaced and want to charge us $700. Does this sound normal? or are they trying to scam? thanks Justin

Does the lights work at all?
Is only one bulb out?

Yes some of the brake lights work, the dealer replaced two of them, but they couldnt get them to work. they said they tried to load an update in the REM, but couldnt. then stated the Rear eletronic module was bad. however back up, center brake light and some of the other brake lights work, just two big bulbs dont. thanks Justin

Usually when the Rem goes bad you will loose alot more things. The rear door locks won't work,And other things in the back of the car.

If the big bulbs won't work then I assume only the 3RD brake light is the one working.

hummm. I would say step number one is getting it to someone else for a second opinion.

Your REM could be bad, but it is most likely not. What year is your car? How many miles? What sort of waranty?

It might be a bad Rem but hard to tell without seeing it and puling codes from it.

It still seems funny that you put in new bulbs then it works for a few then stops working.

So we had the codes ran and no codes came up. However under futher examination we found that not only do the outside brake lights not work, the parking lights stay on all the time. whether parked or not?? anyway, Im guessing there is a bigger problem here. Is there a sensor with the brake pedal/E-brake that could be keeping the parking lights on? but that still doesnt explain the brake light not working. so any information would be helpful. thanks Justin

If no codes show up check from the brake light switch and make sure you get power from the switch.

Look about half way up the brake pedal arm. There should be a switch about half way up. You can check there for power. Also see if it is touching the pedal arm.
