breather box system on S60

What would you advise your wife, daughter, sister to do if this was their S60?
Mine is a 2004, (bought in 2008 though), with 83,000 miles, and I still owe $5,100 on it. I just replaced the fuel pressure sensor, and I need to have the breather box replaced. I was given a price of $995.00 + tax. Do I go ahead with this or get another opinion? Or what?
I love the car, it's a great one, I haven't put very much money into it except oil changes, air filters, spark plugs, and tires. I've kept up with the maintenance according to the manual for the 4 years I've owned it.
A colleague suggested I trade the car in and see about getting a newer car since mine is falling apart. I don't feel it's falling apart at all.
But financially with still owing $5,100 on an 8 year old car, I'm so undecided.
Thanks for your advice!

If you were my family, I'd recommend you get the whole PCV system (includes breather box) replaced.
First, Wouldn't hurt to get a second opinion. Why are they telling you need to have it done?
Second, what trim of S60 do you have (T5, 2.5T, N/A)
Third, Location. We're from all over the county on here and one of us may be able to recommend a place in your area for you to go. If not, do you have any car entheuest friends that could recommend an indie shop in your area?

Is the $995 a quote form the dealer or from an indie shop? That sounds like a dealer price to me.

Once you find an indie shop you like, get a quote from them, also ask if you can provide your own parts.
Order the whole PCV system from iPd or FCP, then have the shop do the labor.

It is still a pretty spendy repair as the shop has to remove the intake manifold to get to the breather box. It's not hard, just takes a little time to do it all.

Hey Matt,

Thanks for your expert opinion. I have the regular S60 2.5 it is not turbo. The volvo dealer said the box was backed up or something & was putting pressure on other parts, which could lead to oil leakage. I'm near Rochester NY but not sure what an indie shop is. =)

Not a problem.
Yep, that does indeed sound like it need to be replaced. I just recently had to do the same thing to my 850R.

Here's what you need (It's based on serial number of your engine. If you call them they'll be happy to help you figure out which one you'll need).
PCV Breather System Kit 2003-2006 P2 S60 V70 Non-Turbo
Or
PCV Breather System Kit P2 S60 V70 Non-Turbo

An indie shop is just an independently owned shop not connected to any dealer or specific make of car. Their prices are much better and a good indie shop's quality of workmanship will be just as good as the dealer. And every indie shop I've used will install parts I provide. That way you won't be charged there markup on the parts.

Check with some of your friends to see if they have any places close by you that they would recommend you.

Matt, thanks bud! Late reply but I was out of the office with an urgent matter and did not even log onto email or the forum. I am one of those individuals that can live and breathe without facebook, twit, email, and my cell phone I do turn off from time to time! =) I am so blessed thanks to God that I find dwelling on His Word is a lot healthier for me than what the latest post is on whatever site!

No worries, Sometimes it sure does feel good to get out of the techno bubble of modern life.

Let us know how everything turns out for you. :)

my rule of thumb is, if the car is costing more per month in repairs, then a car payment would cost then yes its time to replace it. it sounds like you have a very solid car. i would fight tooth and nail to keep it.
