Default Cat. Converter replacement

I just picked up my new S60 T5 last night. Pretty much mint inside and out. Got it for $4000 with 117k on the clock. Stack of maintenance records and everything. It does need a thing or two. The rear O2 sensor and the cat. converter need replacing (check engine light is on and the previous owner had the dealer check it out).

Volvo wanted some ridiculous amount for the cat. Does anyone recommend any universal ones? Also, I did a search and read that the Volvo V70 fuel injectors can go bad and throw the cat. converter code. Is this common on the S60 as well, and should I look into that before replacing the cat.?

Any input appreciated!

My former Volvo repair shop told me that installing a non-Volvo Cat Converter on the newer year Volvos has the risk of not working properly........there's a posting on this forum I recall that someone had that experience. However, I've also read a posting by someone that faulty 02 oxygen sensors can cause the Cat Converter code so I'd thoughly check out all possibilities prior to installing a new Cat...........they are very expensive. I had one installed on my 2001 V70 a few months ago and it was $1200 just for the Volvo part.

Called the service guy at the dealer who wasn't too helpful and only told me the code they pulled was 4801.

If I go for the universal cat, should I get one of these as well?

The muffler shop should have everything need to do the job...New cat, and O2 bungs. Find a good shop and they should be able to take care of you.

Default Replacing Catalytic Converter

A word of caution. My "check engine" light came on, and I had the catalytic converter replaced on my 2001 S60 a few months ago with a universal part that bolted right on -- not one that requires cutting the exhaust pipe to install. According to the shop, this cat was approved for use in California, and the part ran around $700.00. This did not fix the problem. I purchased an Innova code reader that insists that the problem is the converter. Just to make sure, I replaced the rear 02 sensor, and this did not fix the problem. I hope you have better luck. At least the code reader allows me to turn off the "check engine" light once a week.

Thanks for the tips guys! Luckily it was just the rear O2 sensor setting off the code. It's been 500 miles since I replaced that and no CEL.

Welcome to the forums BTW, you'll find a ton of good info here for your new S60. Hope to see you at one of the Eurowerks gtg's. We'll be having a swede BBQ this summer sometime so you'll have to stop by.

Default cat code

I have a bad coil that is also throwing a cat code since it is causing an imbalance of emmisions coming out of the cylinder headed to the converter. I'd rather spend less than $100.00 on a new coil than $1200.00 on a new cat. Will let you know if the coil stops the cat code.
