Check Engine Light

I'm not a mechanic and have very limited knowledge of the proper terminology which you will notice in my description of the problem.

CEL came on, when to AutoZone and they told me it was throwing an EVAP error (P0456).

Went to the gas station and when I took the gas cap off, the thing that the pump nozzle goes into was disconnected from the rubber thing that's supposed to hold it in place. Well, I fixed it, refueled, and reseated the gas cap turning it until it clicked. Get back in the car, the CEL is still lit. IF the problem was the cap not being seated properly or the pipe thing coming loose from the rubber thing, do I have to go to the dealer to reset the light or should it have gone off by itself?

Sometimes even though it's something simple, you might need to reset the CEL. Geta code reader from Autozone/Pep Boys/etc, then you check the codes yourself, and reset them.

Not positive about the volvo's but on my last car if it didnt seal properly, the warning light would kick on, then if you fixed it the car had to be re-started and run several times(6 i believe) before the code would re-set itself and the warning light would go away. Kind of a way just for the car to make sure it truly was fixed.

According to the dealership, the code fired 80 starts ago and 81 starts ago and has not occurred since. They reset the CEL and sent me on my way (no charge).

is there a way to reset the CEL yourself? would disconnecting the battery work?

no - you need a code reader - available at autozone or pepboys in the 80-100 dollar range.

Lucky. My dealer charged me $90 just to read a code. $100 to clean the throttle body.

can you believe that!!
