Clear-coat Scratch Removers and Protective Waxes?
 

Hey,

I am looking to remove scratches (from shallow to a little deeper but still in clear-coat) from my newly purchased used 2003 S60 (black). I have been reading and doing a lot of research on the different types of scratch removers. Overall, it seems that Quixx should work the best for both minor and larger clear-coat scratches.

Does anyone have any experience or opinions on Quixx or other scratch removers? What works best? Should I only use Quixx on the small deep scratches and use some other remover on shallow scratches/scuffs which cover large areas?

Are there any other scratch removers which don’t wear down the clear-coat, but instead fill in the scratch and eliminate/reduce the visibility of the scratches and that will not wash out with rain?

Also what is the best wax to use (after I use the scratch remover) which will protect against future scratches, last a long time (durable), and will also reduce the appearance of scratches which were not completely removed?

Advice and opinions would be much appreciated.

Use a Mothers clay bar or equiv. , and after that, all I have to say is XYMOL.
There are products (cheaply had) made specifically for black paint..."Back to Black" is one...

By XYMOL, you mean ZYMOL right? So you suggest the "Volvo Wax" (http://www.autobarn.net/zymol-volvo-wax.html)? Is it worth the pretty large price sticker?

What clay bar would you suggest is best for durability and scratch resistance? I'm looking for protection more than a perfect showroom shine.

The link didn't work, but yes, ZYMOL is what I meant; forgive the misspelling. I have an extremely low mileage Mustang Cobra, and I used to wax it obsessively with zymol. When I had to store the car outside in the elements for a few months without a cover, just a quick wash brought it back to looking like new. I've only waxed the car maybe three times in the past 4 years, and the paint still looks showroom new; it's amazing (and that's on factory Ford paint!)
The stuff is like armour. The site that you provided the link to is temporarily down, but the wax used to be even more expensive. The wax is very hard to strip, and is very hard once it's applied. You can find a bottle of the cleaner wax for under 15 bucks at your local Target store if you're in the U.S.
As for clay bars, I can't vouch for any other than "Mother's." It works well, but if the paint is in good condition, the "cleaner wax" might be all you need.
P.S. For cleaning and removing swirls, Meguiars (sp) makes a good liquid "cleaner wax" for a decent price as well!

So do you use a general ZYMOL wax, or would suggest a brand specific wax? The first site with Zymol products I found after you mentioned it was one with brand specific waxes (Porche, Volvo, Saab). So I am curious if the Volvo formula is actually worth it. The direct links are below.
