Confused about S60 plug in hybrid mpg

Hi I'm a previous Mercedes & Buick owner thinking of a Volvo as my next car. I know the "regular" version of S60 gets about 25-35 mpg. But I'm confused about what the equivalent is for the S60 plug in hybrid. Can anyone explain how the electric motor affects mpg? I have googled but I'm still confused.

Volvo, Porsche and so forth do things differently than what you normally think a hybrid does. Whereas Toyota, Honda, Ford etc. use an Atkinson cycle engine to get better fuel economy and then use the electric part of the drivetrain to compensate for the lower torque from the engine, the T8 seems to just use the battery as a power adder as well as the 21 miles all electric range. Once the battery is depleted, it's just along for the ride.
Like the Prius and other conventional hybrids, our Pacifica recaptures the kinetic energy of the vehicle during braking whereas my understanding is that the T8 does not do this and the EPA numbers support this. Most hybrids will have higher city fuel economy numbers than the highway rating because of the recapture and will then get somewhat better highway mileage as compared to the gas version from the Atkinson cycle engine.

Thanks. I'll read that article

Volvo has now come out with a true hybrid that recaptures the kinetic energy of the car when braking.
