Delayed Response
Hi, I recently picked up an 01 S60 T5 with a manual transmission. As soon as I drove it I realized there was a noticeable delay in acceleration whenever I shifted gears. To my knowledge (which isn't much) and from what I've been told, this is not a normal delay time. I have been told it could be the waste gate or turbo control valve..I really have no clue what it is and was looking for a little help...
Thanks, Chris |
RE: Delayed Response
Welcome
How much of a delay is there? I never tried one with a stick, but I know that these cars have an ETB (electronic throttle body) which will have some delay, when compared to a direct link TB. I know IPD sells a heavy duty TCV:http://www.ipdusa.com/Volvo-S60/Perf...p-74-403-4235/ |
RE: Delayed Response
The delay is about 3 seconds in each gear. It seems to be worse when I'm at a higher rpm and I shift gears. When I shift at a low rpm it's hardly noticeable but when I allow the turbo to engage, I literally have to sit and wait for the car to pick up speed again.
I bet if someone drove beside me they could see my car accelerate (she's pretty quick!) and then when I shift, it would seem as if I took my foot off the gas completely for a few seconds. Not that I'm a street racer but I have given in a couple times and it's frustrating cause I'll blow someone away off the line, then when I have to shift they get a chance to catch up (cause of the lag time), and it repeats every gear... I'll probably take it to the dealership, as the check engine light is on, but I just wanted an honest, unbiased opinion on the issue. Appreciate your help. |
RE: Delayed Response
Sounds like it could be the TCV.
The dealer should be able to tell you the codes so you will know what the real problem is. (Moderator) tech knows more than me so if he drops in, he can probably give you a better definition. Edit; I think AutoZone can read the codes for free. |
RE: Delayed Response
i have an 01 S60 T5 and my delay is mostly at lower RPMs where the turbo is not building any boost.. it is possible that something in the turbo setup isnt working right.. but there is a little lag in the throttle with these cars but no where near as bad as the DBW japanese cars.

RE: Delayed Response
Just took my car to Volvo. They said the delay was caused by a faulty pedal sensor or something like that. Apparently there's nothing wrong with the turbo. Never heard of something like this before but I suppose if that's what Volvo says it is, it's legit..
Cost to replace is $295CAN parts & labour. |
RE: Delayed Response
And that is another reason I dont care much for the electronic throttle bodies :).
Just more things to break. |
