Default Down Pipes

I was wondering what the stock size of the volvo 2.4t downpipe is. i am thinking about getting a custom 3inch downpipe bc i can get a good deal compared to getting an exhaust system. I was also wondering how would it work with a stock exhaust system bc i dont have the money for the exhaust first. If i got a free flowing muffler with the downpipe would that help? Also i do not plan on doing many more mods after the ecu. -- Main question is, how good would a 3in. downpipe work with the stock exhaust possibly free flowing muffler and the ecu flash? and any suggestions.

1. The stock downpipe is around 2.25"-2.75".

2. It will work fine with the stock catback system. But would benefit greatly from a custom catback system.

3. Just adding a muffler wont do anything. You need a better flowing catback system.

4. Is the guy going to mandrel bend your 3" downpipe?

It would be a mandrel bent dp. Granted i would benefit more if i had a catback, but would i still receive a decent or noticable gain of power? And from wat i heard before, i should get the downpipe before i get the ECU flash. right?

1. Mandrel bent = good idea. Glad to hear your getting it that way.

2. You will gain some power yes. But the OEM catback system is still restrictive. So you wont get as much of a gain without doing a mandrel bent catback system.

3. Yes you should do all the engine mods your going to do before you get an ECU upgrade.

I now have a question about mufflers.. I am looking into the magnaflow mufflers and they have the race series and street series.. If i put the straight through muffler on with my stock exhaust im assuming it would quiet it down some correct? Also how much more restrictive is the street series compared to the race series? if anyone out there knows about these a lil info would help. im planning on this one .. If im planning on the downpipe and leaving the exhaust stock would you recommend the race or street.

1. Magnaflow is a good brand, glad to see your going with them. BORLA is also a good brand too.

2. I had a Magnaflow performance muffler on my old car and it wasn't that loud at all. I seriously doubt there is any real difference between their street and race series.

3. Well it is a aftermarket muffler so you will have that sound. It will be a deep tone at idle and it will get louder when you accelerate. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XMK4sre52PM
That link is to the one I had on my old car. The idle sounds great. However the camera was really close to the muffler so it is over modulated. It sounded great in person. Also I had a 2.5" catback system made for that car.

I seriously wouldn't put a muffler on my stock system. Pointless you wont gain anything but sound. Just save up the cash for a catback system man. It is well worth it.

the thing is i dont want it to be really loud.thats why i dont wany to get a whole system. i just want some pretty good performance and a nice deep tone, and nice clean look.i really dont plan on doing too much performance, besides the downpipe , already have a K&n drop in and the ecu flash and muffler for the deep tone. I kind of want exhaust just not to loud. and do not have the money right now for that but i do for the d.p. and a nice muffler. Suggestions or thoughts?

Ok an ECU upgrade wont give you sound, it will boost your performance.

Secondly having a 2.5" free flowing mandrel bent catback with a performance muffler wont be that loud really. Did you go on YouTube or StreetFire and listen to some of the modded s60's?

If your going to to exhaust at all do it right the first time. Save up for a catback system man it will be well worth it for the extra performance and sound trust me. If you put a muffler on your s60 on the stock catback your just like all those other RICERS out there that do the same damn thing. I am sorry but it is true. You want sound and some performance do it right.

Again I suggest you do your downpipe now. Then save up for a real catback system with a free flowing straight through design muffler like the Magnaflow you picked out. Then get your ECU upgrade.

Even though this is an s60R, this is more then likely what yours might sound like.

Here is an example of the EVOLVE system for the s60R.

I know I am showing you R models. However you have a turbo too and this is pretty much what you should expect give or take.

Another s60R custom exhaust system.

I must say thank you very much for your help, you are very helpful. Now this doesnt have to do with downpipes or exhausts but i am wondering if you can directly bolt up a larger turbo to the 2.4t or if anyone has done this already. Just looking for a little info on this.
