Engine System Service Required
I have a 2002 S60 2.4T AWD. In recent months the message "Engine System Service Requried" along with yellow "!" enclosed in a triangle has appeared. Sometimes the message is gone the next time I drive the car; other times it is not. I have taken the car to a local Volvo mechanic (not a dealer; the nearest dealer is about 150 miles away) three times. On each occassion they have found a different computer code from their diagnostic computer: 1) Undefined brake problem; 2) Miscellaneous error and 3) Routine service required. Routine service had been performed with appropriate resets about 2000 mile prior to this intermittent problem. My mechanic has basically said they don't know what is going on but it doesn't appear to be an actual problem based on their inspections. This is getting frustrating. I drive about 100 miles to work (opposite direction from the Volvo dealer) and am concerned if the next time the message displays it is signifying a real problem. Has anyone else had a similar experience? Thanks.
Well if the indapendant dealer doesn't have the proper diag equiptment then it will be hard to figure out.
If it had a code for a brake problem then it might have been a bad brake pedal sensor.
DO you have more details on the codes?

I have a 2003 S60 AWD 30k miles with the same issue and it has been a nightmare. After 4 trips to the dealer they finally with the help of the Volvo national techs and 15 pages of code determined it was the DEM. The day after they replaced it, the gear shaft completely disengaged on the automatic transmission leaving me stranded for 2 hours. I am getting rid of this car as soon as I can.
