Fuel Tank Door Lock Problem

The door lock on the fuel tank operates opposite of what it should do. When the doors are locked the fuel tank door unlocks. When the doors are unlocked the fuel tank door locks. This car has a fuel tank door unlock switch on the dash near the headlight switch. This switch seems to do nothing. It seems like an electrical problem but I can't seem to narrow it down. I switched out the door control module on the drivers door. I've checked the relays in the trunk compartment and even swapped a couple around and that didn't change the problem. I took the lock mechanism out and took it apart. Nothing wrong there. It works well, except that it work backwards. I don't care that the fuel tank door is locked while the car is being driven. It would be nice to get it to lock when the doors are locked. Does anybody have any ideas of what might be wrong. The only thing I can think of is it might be in the switch on the dash.

RE: Fuel Tank Door Lock Problem

It should lock 15 minutes after the car is locked.
This way you could get out of your car and lock it and still pump gas.

RE: Fuel Tank Door Lock Problem

Thanks for the reply. I am aware that some cars have a delay and some can be programmed to lock immediately. I did check that and it does not lock after a delay. Unfortunately this fuel tank door only locks when the doors are UNLOCKED. That really doesn't help much. I have the choice to keep the car locked or the fuel tank door locked. I can't do both so I choose to keep the car locked. Any other ideas?

Has anyone ever messed with the motor or wiring before?

RE: Fuel Tank Door Lock Problem

Not that I'm aware of. The door locks used to be a problem and would randomly lock and unlock themselves. At that time the gas tank door started to act up. The door lock problem was solved by changing out the drivers door control module. But the gas tank door never worked correctly again. I makes sense that it is a wiring problem but I'm leaning toward it being something in the software, module or relay. It's not a big deal but I like things to work correctly.

I would have maybe the dealer look at it for software.
