Sounds like a detonation issue. What engine octane is dispensed in the fuel tank? Could also be deposits on the pistons which will cause hot spots and detonation.
It might also be faulty spark plugs and/or coils.

The car should run just fine on 87, so I doubt octane is your problem.

are you sure about 87? I have a 2001 t5 and at the coast the minimum octane for this car is 95 octane

Im running 94 at the moment . I think it just might be the motor mounts. Maybe should think about replacing them ...

I can save two pages of "discussion".

I run the recommended premium and lately I've been running it mixed with 1/3 E85. But that's just me.

Volvo has a bulletin stating that only E10 should be used, so not sure I'd mix E85 in there.

As for the OP's question. If the manual recommends premium I'd run premium. Recommends isn't the same as "requires" and yes you can run regular if you need to or just want to but the engine will not perform as well. In the manual it states that.

As for playing with a mixture of E85.
Volvo also makes a big point out of telling people you should only use authentic Volvo replacement parts when maintaining or repairing your car.

If we followed that advise we wouldn't have the fun of performance parts. We wouldn't have access to better designed replacement parts and for those of us on a tight budget we couldn't afford to maintain our car if we had to pay Dealer $$$ list for parts.

I'm not recommending anyone else do E85, I only said that I was.
I used my supercharged ford for the test subject and it's been doing better with the mix. Now I'm seeing how it goes with the brick

Recommending not using anything more than E10 and recommending using OEM parts are two totally different things.

Saying the engine will not perform as well on 87 vs 91 is a bit misleading, too. It will perform just fine. It will get the same mileage, it will not misfire, it will not stall out.

That's not what Volvo says about fuel requirements.
They say "Volvo engines are designed for optimum performance on unleaded premium with an octane rating of 91, or above. At least that's what my 95's owner manual says.

It will run on regular unleaded of at least 87 but it's not optimum. What exactly is not optimum, I don't want to find out. There are a lot of threads where people have said poor performance, knocking, poor gas mileage but it might be that their cars condition is marginal and this was the proverbial straw that broke it's back.

There are lots of threads where people don't know what they are talking about. 87 won't cause worse gas mileage. If there was going to be damage from running 87, it would be required, like on some vehicles.
