Ignition lock cylinder broken!

Hi, I have a 2001 S60 that the ignition lock cylinder broke. I am looking for any advice on were I can find a used replacement one if that is possible. I am not sure if by getting a used one I will be able to turn the car on, without taking it to the dealer to have the computer "reset" to the new switch and key. Can anybody explain to me the function of the key; is it to be able to read the sensor or simply to unlock and turn the ignition on?
Is there anyway to make it work by not taking it to the dealership even if its with 2 extra keys.
Any advice on the issue will be greatly appreciated.

The key has a chip inside, stored with a code, that light around the Ignition cylinder is also a antenna ring that creates magnetic field, that powers up the chip in the key. When the dealer proggrams the key, the code is stored in the CEM and in the ECM, also the immobilizer proggrams the key with a code also. All this info has to match in order for the car to start.( or stay running, depending on car )
So you can not put a used one in and have the dealer reset the computer, the keys will already be coded. I guess you could use new keys and have them proggramed. But lets look at a couple problem with that.
1) Keys are what about $60-$75, plus $36 for software, plus $45 to program 150+36+45=231 I believe that is more then ignition switch.
2) Key codes are ordered by VIN, let say you go with a used ignition switch, you will need the VIN into order keys, no problem at first, but let say down the road you lose the keys or they stop working, but you misplaced the other VIN, how are you going to order keys.
Like tech said, new one is only route.

I have read several good write ups on repairing the key cylinder or broken tabs related to the steering lock mechanism. If you don't mind paying for a new cylinder and drilling out the old one then that is probably the route to take. Getting your car to run right now just involves some work, good luck.
