Knocking When clutch is disengaged

Hey, I'm new to the Volvo community. I recently purchased a 2004 Volvo s60r and I noticed a knocking sound coming from the engine bay, I then realized that the knock would go away when the clutch was engaged. Any ideas on what this issue could be.

when you say the clutch is engaged - you mean the pedal is out (meaning power is going through the clutch into the transmission)? if you are hearing odd sounds when the pedal is pressed down and the clutch is disengaged), then the likely causes are the throw out bearing or possibly something in the pressure plate, fly wheel or clutch plate. Any sense of drag when shifting gears to suggest the clutch is not fully disengaging?
