Default License Plate Screws/Caps...

I feel almost stupid asking this, but it has to be done.

I bought a new license plate frame. I unscrewed some "caps" that were holding the old frame and license plate on. Took the plate and frame off. Now there are just 4 screws sticking out (NOT the head of the screws, the bottom of them pointing out at me). I believe the heads of the screws are just on the other side of the trunk on the inside of it, and don't even know how to get to them.

Again, feeling stupid, but asking for advice on why these screws are in the wrong way in the first place and how to remove them...

Those are part of the plate bracket. Why do you want to remove them?

I can't find any "caps" if you will that work with them. I've taken it to a few auto shops and they keep giving me the wrong caps, even after they look at it themselves.

You mean the nuts that hold the license plate in place?

I'll have to take a picture...I am almost positive I'm using the incorrect terminology and probably making the situation a bit more silly than it already sounds! I'll be back to post the picture once I can take it in decent daylight..

Yes, it would be those. I thought I was asking for something normal when I was asking for the caps/nuts from the auto shops but kept getting things that didn't fit them. Maybe I wasn't as crazy as I thought?! What do I need to be searching for then to screw on the license plate/frame? Just 'license plate nuts'?

The problem I have found is that a lot of times when I search for that, it comes up with caps that are supposed to fit over the head of a nail, not the tip, or, it comes up with nuts/caps that are screws themselves, but obviously nothing can be screwed in if there are already screws there...

Thank you for helping me with this...

You need Volvo part number 980040 - flange cap nut.

You can't find them at "auto shops" because they have a metric fine thread.

Do you work on your own vehicles?

What happened to the "caps" that you took off originally to remove the original frame and the license plate? Why can't you just put those back on?

They are M5 x .80 if you don't have a dealer nearby and want to check a hardware store

I use stainless steel nut caps. No rust issues later.

So above is my license plate. As you can see, I have the two "caps" I am trying to replace on the top, nothing on the two bottom screws. I am replacing them because they don't look very good, and I also want two new ones to go on the bottom so there are 4 instead of just 2.

So buy four new ones from the dealership, they aren't expensive...
