Need new ECM

Hey, all.

My '05 S60 2.5T AWD has an ECU that is unrepairable. I've sent it to one of those businesses that fix and return but was told they cannot fix mine.

The dealership wants $2800 for this repair and I've been told by numerous mechanics and shops that the ECM has to be new and programmed to the car by the dealership. However, I see either used ECMs or refurbished ECMs (whatever that means) sold for cheap and a part of me thinks that's gotta work or they wouldn't be selling them.

Would a used one from the same model/year work in mine or am I stuck having to go to the dealer for this expensive repair?

Just a backstory: The care all of sudden started running bad and barely made the 2-mile journey home. Thinking it might be plugs, I replaced those. Then I replaced the coils. The car ran beautifully for about ten minutes and it would studder and lose power, but only occasionally. I've then replaced the air control module and fuel control module and fuel filter. Nothing worked.

I've taken it to three shops, one being a dealership. The first two couldn't replicate the issues I was having, as it only ran bad occasionally. Then at the third independent mechanic's shop the car acted up on him and he thought it might be the ECM. He said he wasn't sure that would be the fix but that I could send it in and have it looked at and fixed, if it was broken. I sent it in and was told the ECM is unrepairable, which leads me to believe the ECM was the culprit all along.

Any information you can provide is greatly appreciated.

Thanks.

Mamoru

Who did you send the ECU to?

Have you talked to xemodex about your problem?

I sent it to SIA Electronics.

Sounds like the company you recommended might work (just got off the phone with them) so I'll be sending it in.

Thank you so very much!
