noise from RF hub when shifting in and out of Park

I have an 04 S60 non-turbo (very recently purchased). It makes a popping noise when shifting between gears (P to R, P to D, N to R, N to D). Sounds like its coming from the driver's side front hub area. The best way to describe it is that it sounds like to hollow sticks knocked together and makes a "Pock" sound. The sound is not obtrusive, but is concerning, simplty b/c I don't know the source. It runs and drives great. It is an auto transmission w/ 118K miles. Could this be a bearing issue or a trans mount issue? If it was an old school car, I'd check the U joints, but it I'm not well-schooled on front wheel drive.

It is LF hub, not RF as title says. whoops

Thanks, in advance, for any suggestions.

Darin

It's your shaft bolt. Either retighten or replace with one that's designed for a XC90.
Do a search to double check if I have the right model. Several posts regarding this solution.

I searched "shaft bolt" in the S60 forums and nothing too much was helpful. My ignorance may shine brightly here, as I haven't even yet pulled a tire off this thing...are you referring to the bolt that holds the rotor in place?

he's referring to the bolt that holds the cv axle attached to the wheel hub

Ok. Thanks. I REALLY need to get a Haynes for this thing. Guess the European version will have to do. :)

Exactly.

Search for "axle ping"

What the TNN says to do is to remove the axle bolts and refasten it with Loctite, if problem still persists, replace with XC90 Axle bolts.

I bypassed the Loctite step and just went straight to the XC90 Axle bolts, installed, and problem fixed.

That's good info, Mad Matt. Thank you. Seems like all these folks had the dealer do the repair. Appears that most were still under warranty at the time. Gonna order that Haynes today. :-)
