power steering fluid low

If the power steering fluid is low, would that cause a rubbing /grinding when I make sharp left turns?

Also, what type of power steering fluid to fill er' up with?

Can I add atf to top it off? anyone?

I am also having the same issue. But I checked the fluid myself and it was high.....

ATF not WTF

so my transmission fluid will do the trick? I have 1 Qt of Mobil ATF 3309 leftover, suitable for use, but I did hear someone tell me to use the green stuff, but this ATF is red.

The information I supplied was from the Volvo owners manual and doesn't specify a particular type or grade of ATF. You might call a dealer and ask what they prefer.

I had this issue just a couple weeks ago. It'll make a weird noise on sharp left turns due to the design of the fluid reservoir. The early design sucked (literally) as the vacuum tube was on the side. The updated one is on the bottom, so no matter how hard of a left turn you make, you won't get the weird noise.

The fix was a new ('05 +) reservoir and line. The reservoir was about $80 and the S shaped hose was about $90 from Volvo. You can get them cheaper online.

As for the PS fluid, I just went with the stuff they recommended which was a rip-off at $24.99 a quart.

Thanks for the explain. I believe the steering fluid should never need to be changed and therefore not have it's level go down. So I need to find out how this could be leaking.

Interesting that the S60R had that problem, my 03 S60 has the pump feed on the bottom and the return at the top. When I got my car the power steering fluid was a little low and it was the connection at the bottom of the tank that was seeping a little fluid, I cut off 1/2" of hose and reattached and is has stayed dry. Since I tend to buy used cars and keep them for a while I always replace the power steering fluid, and when I did change the fluid on this car I found there was quite a bit of sludge in the reservoir, too bad they don't have a filter like some other cars. I goy my fluid from Volvo as I could not find Volvo spec fluid in the parts stores.
