Rumbling noise from Dashboard/Steeringshaft
Hello Everybody,
My Volvo S60 D5 from 2002 is giving a very good ride (142k miles) but since april this year, I noticed a slight rumble coming from the dashboard area on the driver's side. It happened when steering sharply into a bend or on bumpy roads and as well when the weels were turned all the way to the steering stops, the car not driving at that moment. Lately, the noise has become very obvious and it sounds like something is loose behind the dashboard. Since this is sterring/hard ride related, it is definitely not the dashboard so I thought of the steering shaft. No change od noise after fitting 2 new front tyres.
Anyone any idea?
Thanks,
Lucas

RE: Rumbling noise from Dashboard/Steeringshaft
Hello Saluki,
Thanks for replying. Perhaps I didn' explain my self very well. I know it is difficult troubleshoot noise through text. However, the noise really comes from the driver's side part of the dashboard, behind the dials. I am fairly sure it doesn't come from anywere in the engine bay area and it isn't a metallic sound either. It is rumbling, like something is loose within the dashboard. So, when ever there is a bad road or when when there is vibration from turning the steering wheel to the end, it rumbles. Can it be loose cables lying about in the dashboard? Is it easy to disassemble the dashboard?
Thanks, Lucas.
PS: car has 142K miles now but is still as tight as new. Really happy with that.
PS2: Maybe I can upload an MP3 file off this rumbling?

I have a similar problem coming from under my dashboard. A couple months ago it was coming from the right side. I took it for repair and the vent door actuator was replaced but I was warned that there are several door. Now that same noise is coming from about the middle. Is there any way to fix this without having to go back to the repair shop and spend a lot of money. I have a 2004 S60, not turbo. Thank you,
