Transmission Fluid
ok wow this is a long Tread. 1st let me say i think this site and TECH is awesome. I THANK YOU very much for all your help and thoughts in the past!
now i have a new thing going on with my 2000 V70 2.4 L non Turbo 5 speed. it has 182,000 runs great i ahve had it for the last 15,000 miles NO trany issues, untill this week.
first i noticed hard shifts, and a couple of 'flare ups' when it missed a grear around 30-40mph. then within a day and 1/2 it got a little worse, so i took it to a local trany shop and they said it was LOW on fluid and added Dextron maybe even dexIII. and sent me on my way. it drove better (fine/ normal) for 25- 30 miles. then this morning it will not shift at 20Mph. got it back home (less than 3 miles when it freaked out) and checked the fluid and it is WAY over full. so i have parked it and came here. and the 'shift' light came on beacuse i was in 1st gettting home (i was very carefull not to have too many RPMs) and the shift light is now flashing and the CEL came on. went out to check it tonight and now it wont even go into any gear.
thinking about undoing the battery cable to reset the computer and just draining out some fluid before i do anything or towing to the local guy and asking him 'what did you do to it?'
my questions is. should i try to drain ALL the fluid out before i fill it with the Mobil 3309?
or can i do the drain and refill method? (but what about the bad stuff that is in there?)
do you think that is might be totally shot? (i pray that you dont think so)
thanks for any thoughts you guys are the best!

I have been reading the whole thread bit I am still confused.
I believe someone said that all cars after '99 need a JWS3309 compatible transmission fluid. I have a 2000 V70 XC SE and according to the manual it should be a 4-Speed Automatic (since I can select gears 1-3, whereas the 5-Speed should have Low, 3 and 4). Also according to the manual the 4-Speed automatic requires ATF Dexron III or Mercon (which to me seems not to be the 3309 or Volvo gearbox oil, that the 5-speed needs). Does that seem right to you or did I understand anything wrong?
The car has 94.5k miles on it and according to carfax the transmission fluid has been changed at 90k (and no records before), however the fluid already is dark brown. Could this be if they used the wrong fluid or is it more likely that they didn't change the whole fluid? Since it seems the fluid has only be changed once (if at all) I understand it that several drain and fills would be advised instead of a flush, is that correct? Also could someone maybe explain what a flush does that may harm the transmission?
Thanks

Looks like I killed this thread. I'll try one more time.
2000 V70 XC w/ 4-speed automatic
Went to the mechanic yesterday to do one drain & fill (about 4 quarts) and he used synthetic Dexron II. I thought Dexron II was non-synthetic but apparently there's synthetic and nonsynthetic versions. Anyhow he told me that's what he always uses for Volvos and that it's the best. I am a bit concerned because of this thread but if the synthetic fulfills Dexron II specs it should be fine....right?

If you used Dexron II in your 2000 Volvo you may have just ruined your transmission. I used Toyota T-IV in my 06 S60 which meets jws3309. Theres also Mobil 3309 but its hard to find and very expensive.
I found this answer on Matthew's Volvo Site.

This thread is confusing me. The original poster has a 00 V70XC SE? He mentions trans fluid for a 5 speed? Is this a European car? Is it a manual conversion?
The 2000 V70XC only came in the US with a 4 speed auto awd trans. If it is a 5 speed manual conversion, which I doubt, then just use the factory fluid like Ozark said and be done with it. Only non-turbo cars in 2000 came with the 5 speed auto trans, which takes the expensive Volvo fluid. This car should have the 4 speed auto awd in it. The 4 speed auto uses DEXRON IIIG or IIIH, refer to tech journal 16773, which was published 1-16-2009. The only reason you would use a different fluid was if there is harsh lock-up. There is a service bulletin (43-0029) that says you should flush with the JWS3309, the expensive Volvo fluid used in the 5 speed auto trans, to fix that issue.
For the record -
ALL 4 speed auto fwd/awd use Dexron IIIG or IIIH (1161621)
All 5/6 speed auto trans fwd/awd will use JWS3309 (1161640, 1161540)
All manual 5/6 speed manual trans will use API GL-4 synthetic (1161745)
PS - This is only what the manufacturer says, I know other folks have had luck using mobil 1, the Toyota synthetic, all kinds of different stuff in place of what Volvo says to use. This is what Volvo used from the factory.

I have the same issue! I asked my dealer about changing the transmission fluid on our 2005 s60 with 101,000 miles on it and he said that it takes a very expensive fluid that costs about $32 a quart. He thought the fluid looked clean enough that I could postpone the work. Does that sound reasonable?

LMFAO
Great Thread, awesome info. Going to drain and fill X3 my '06 S60 2.5AT with with a JWS 3099 type fluid as soon as I get the time.
Just to say, this thread is at times really annoying, and at other times totally hilarious, but I just spent the better half of my afternoon at work reading all 27 pages of it.
Thanks

You can buy a case of the Mobil 3309 for less than $100. Run the car up on some ramps, pull the belly pan, and there's a drain plug on the transmission. It'll drain about 3 qts...refill with new fluid...do this every 3-5k miles for a while. It's a little work, but much cheaper than paying the dealer $500 to do it.
Regular price: $68.34
Sale price: $65.76
Manual (M 66) 2.1 US qts. (2.0 liters)
Automatic (AW 55-50) 7.6 US qts. (7.2 liters)
Automatic-R (TF-80SC) 7.4 US qts. (7.0 liters)

Dealers are full of bs they told me i need alot of repairs on my 2004 Volvo S60 R AWD. I also went to another place and they told me i just need my front brakes replaced. Than a third place said couple of things have to be done so i was like are they just telling me that to spend alot of money or what? can't trust them.............
Mine in Cincinnati has been quite good and I trust them (Union Centre Volvo). I do use a local private shop for my basic work, however; they're also pretty good and a good bit cheaper (Northgate Auto). Obviously, some dealers are better than others, I'm sorry to hear you don't trust yours.
Volvo's policy of not allowing dealers to replace transmission fluid is bizarre. My transmission (2001 S60 with 70,000 miles) runs much, much more smoothly now that I've had the fluid changed. I also added a transmission cooler and filter; I want this car to run for ten more years!

Ok I know I'm starting to beat a dead horse ...
I HAve a 07 S60 2.5t FWD w 117K I feel I am overdue for a flush.
I'm reading don't ever do it , do it, use this fluid use that.. etc...
Can someone give me the skinny ...
I would rather leave the old fluid if I have a chance of ruining the tranny...
Thanks
Joe

1) DO NOT flush your transmission. That would be horrible. I repeat DO NOT do that.
2) The fluid you must use is a JWS-3309 equivalent fluid. The popular choices are Mobil 3309 and Toyota T-IV (yes, Toyota T-IV).
I have the same exact model car as you (2007 2.5T FWD). I used Mobil 3309 but swapped over to Toyota T-IV because I can get it cheaper.
As far as actually changing the fluid, you want to start off slowly. Either do a drain/fill (which only does ~3 quarts) or use the IPD kit that will allow you to utilize the tranny cooler line going into the radiator to pump a couple quarts out (with engine running). Then refill with a couple quarts.
I say do 2-3 quarts every time you change the oil for 3 oil changes. Then move to a 6 quarts every ~12,000 miles or so.
Some people do a drain and fill every oil change because it only does ~3 quarts. I, personally, use the IPD kit because I do 6qts at a time every 2nd oil change.

Just came across this thread. My Volvo dealer told me today, that the transmission fluid in a 2002 S60 is synthetic. I am new to modern Volvo's, my last Volvo was in 1968 and was a P544. I was asking the dealer about a trans change. They do a flush, they charge $400, there is no filter and he clearly said synthetic oil. Apparently there is controversy about this trans fluid stuff.
I find $400 for a flush to be a bit too much to handle.

Tech I think you are an honest guy. I think you are reading into things too much and we have to deal only with facts.
having said that I have the following comments.
Volvo Has never said their fluid is synthetic (people assume the high rip off price insinuates it is synthetic and special) I have never seen anything written by Volvo saying their fluid is synthetic. And Volvo does NOT say that Valvoline can be used. All Volvo says is the JWS 3309 oil spec compatible oils can be used. Period
The Valvoline letter will be ignored by the writer. Valvoline only says that it's Maxlife trans fluid could be used for Volvo. They are essentially saying it should work. It does NOT meet JWS 3309 oil spec. It is NOT recommended by Volvo. Only Mobil 3309 is. And they say ONLY once the car is out of Warranty can you use the Valvoline fluid. It violates the warranty.Your right another poster (Volvo Tech CMC), said it was a Ford transmission. He obviously doesn't know S60's at all regarding transmissions. You said GM.
It is very clear That:
Valvoline Maxlife trans fluid is NOT approved by Volvo for S60 trans
Valvoline says it can be used once out of Warranty
Volvo Doesn't approve the use of Valvoline Maxlife as it doesn't meet JWS 3309
Only Mobil 3309 or the Volvo fluid (one in the same) is approved.
Volvo fluid is NOT synthetic, no where has this ever been stated by Volvo, nor does it say it on the bottles either.
S60 auto trans are made by Aisin Warner
S60 trans do have a drain plug and a fill dipstick
S60 trans do not have a serviceable filter
End of Misinformation on this subject
