Default Transmission Flush Mileage

Hello, 2006 S60 2.5T FWD, 173,600 miles. Had transmission flushed at Volvo dealers at 45K, and 90K. It shifts fine, fluid is just a little dirty and think it's time. Anyone see any potential issues? My trusted Volvo mechanic does not.

Have you done a paper towel test? Red is good, brown is normal and if its not black and smells burn then the damage is already done. You only have 80K on the fluid where many cars never get a change (I'm in the every 100K camp) so I don't see a rush and I don't see a problem freshing the fluid, particularly if you are not driving in the mountains or regularly pull a trailer.

Yes, I have. I would say it is a reddish brown mix, slightly dirty but not burnt at all. Smells normal.

cool. I'd say no rush and you can consider doing a set of drain fills vs a full flush. If you have the 6 speed auto, its a bit more complicated than the older transmissions as those use a two part drain tube and you are supposed to set the level when the fluid is 55C (meaning you need VIDA DICE or a similar scanner that can report the tranmission temperature..). Otherwise, drain out 2 quarts, add 2 fresh, run the engine to circulate. Repeat 3 or 4 times and you'll be like 80% fresh fluid.

Unfortunately I don't really have the means or the equipment to do it myself or reset the TCM counter so my plan is to take it to a Volvo dealer and have them do a flush. I have the 5-speed automatic.

A bit of info: I got my transmission flushed at the dealer in Dec, cost was about $300. I also had them investigate an issue with it as well so that may be in the cost as well.

The advertised price is $229. Did all go well? What mileage were you at?

I bought a used S60 at 120k miles and did drain and fills myself because the car was poorly maintained. Got the service done at about 155k, but everything was fine. Car felt much better after. Smoother shifts. They put in some sort of additive in there also, not sure what exactly.

Glad to hear. I brought it to a Volvo dealer at 135K for another flush but they would not do it unless I signed a waiver.

I have a 2008 S60 with the 5 speed. I’ve drained and filled the transmission every 3-4 oil changes since new and it has 245k miles on it today. Transmission shifts great.
I would recommend a drain and fill. Maybe do it now and then again in 10-15k miles. Continue to do that for 3 cycles or so then you can go a little longer. I’ve always used the JWS3309 fluid.
