Default Transmission issues, help me figure out this noise..

Just reread the thread, sorry for the length.

Hey everyone I have a 2002 Volvo S60 that has the 2.4 liter naturally aspirated engine that’s automatic and has just over 260,000 miles on it. It's my girlfriends car and I have been keeping it on its last leg for some time now just trying to provide my girl with transportation until we can get her another car, ultimately trying not to put very much money into the Volvo in order to save for a new car.
I've used this forum multiple times before in order to repair the car and unfortunately I didn't research about the transmission early enough in order to try some preventative maintenance and upgrade repairs and now the transmission is having some issues.
Within the last two weeks the car's transmission started making a whining noise and shortly afterwards during a quick drive the transmission went into what I can only describe as a limp mode because it wouldn't accelerate past 20 mph. After towing the car home I changed the fluid but the whine was still there but I was able to drive it around the block a couple times and it seemed to be out of limp mode to me because it was shifting correctly and getting up to speed. Now the car is still whining and going in and out of limp mode and we haven’t driven it very much, just around the block trying to diagnose it.
Now the transmission has been always a little rough shifting from first to second gear but with some careful driving we have been able to keep the car going for the last 80,000 miles and now I'm curious if there's and suggestive routes I should take in addressing the transmissions issues this time, basically can I salvage the transmission still? At 260,000 miles I'm aware that the transmission has outlasted many other S60's for it's year so if it's toast I've been waiting for it to go but who knows with the collective knowledge on this site, maybe there’s a little more life I can squeeze out of the car cheaply until I can buy my girl another car in a few months.
The potential repairs and or upgrades I have read about on this site, and again the old saying, "I wish I knew than what I know now" applies. It has the Aisin AW 55-50SN transmission which is known to have issues with the valve body, now I know I could replace it but at the $800 parts cost it may not be worth it, there's also the upgraded B4 server cover option which is cheap but the transmission could be too far gone for it to have any affect and lastly I have heard there's a software upgrade option.. I'm eager to hear your ideas, comments or suggestions.. I've attached a few links to a video of the sound that the transmission is making, hopefully one of them works on this forum thread. Thanks for your help..
