Worn Camshaft
Hello everyone my 2005 S60 2.5 starting making a tapping noise on my way home and the next day it was louder so I parked the car and haven’t moved it. I took it to a mechanic and he said there were multiple miss fires due to a worn camshaft. Everyone is telling me to get rid of the car due to age and mileage but I love the car and don’t want to get rid of it. Is there any way to fix this without replacing the engine or anything that would help the situation without having to get rid of the car. Thank you |
I've not ever heard of a Volvo having camshaft lobe issues. You may have low oil pressure due to the O rings in the oil pan leaking pressure.

Yeah I'd get another opinion by someone familiar with Volvo's. I've never seen or heard of one with a worn camshaft.

Long ago and a different engine but I sold my 1976 265 after my mechanic warned me that camshaft problems were common as the V-6 engine approached 50,000 miles

Yeah, and I had an 85 Suburban 454 that wore the camshaft lobe off the fuel pump riser. What's that have to do with a modern Volvo?

more likely its the lifters - as Tony noted if you have an oil pressure problem they may not fully pump up - or if the car was not properly maintained, there may be some blockage in an oil port. Best to start by confirming the correct oil pressure. Seafoam anyone? :-)

A lot of those 2.5T models had solid lifters so the tapping might be lack of lubrication. Seafoam won't do anything except make Seaform brand rich.
This is a car that I'd probably start with an oil pan removal and go from there. This is a symptom of either low oil pressure and/or blocked oil pickup. |
