02 Sensor Replacement Problems

Great forum!

I have an 98 S70 with 115k on it that had the check engine light on. I had the codes pulled and it showed up as the P0130, the pre cat O2 sensor. Not a big deal, bought a new one and replaced it, unhooked the battery for a while and the light went off. But.... after driving around for a few minutes light appeared again and will not go off. Pulled the codes again and the same P0130 came up.

Emissions tech have told me that I need to drive it over a 100 miles to reset the computer. Did that, no change. Someone else said we need to drive it 300 miles to reset the computer. Is this true, or should I quit wasting time and look for other problems.

Checked the O2 Sensor connections, all looks good. It was not a universal sensor, but rather a direct plug in, not OEM though.

Any help is greatly appreciated.

Was it a bosch sensor?
Anyway you can get your hands on a scanner that reads real time?
If so watch the voltage and see if it sweeps.

RE: 02 Sensor Replacement Problems

Sensor was not a Bosch. The fact that the check engine light did go out, but came back on makes me beleive the story about driving it around for a while.

That was just from the scanner at the Emissions testing facility. They also printed out a report that lsited the readiness indicators.
Here is a list of them in order and if they arecomplete or not completed

Misfire Complete
Fuel System Complete
Comprehensive Component Complete
Catalyst Not Complete
Heated Catalyst Not Supported
Evaporative System Not Complete
Secondary Air System Not Complete
A/C System Refrigerant Not Supported
Oxygen Sensor Not Complete
Oxygen Sensor Heater Complete
EGR System Complete

Yes but you would have to watch the voltage to make sure the sensor is working.
The sensor sweeps from high to low when it is working properly.
When it isn't it will sit still.

Having a hard time finding something that will check the sensor's sweep. Over 300 miles on the car now and light is still on. It was not a Bosch unit, should I quit wasting time and go get a Bosch?

Thanx for the help!

Usually Volvo's only like Bosch sensors.
You need to find someone that has a scanner that reads real time data then they can read teh voltage.

I think we are on the same page here. By the time I find a tech that is willing to do it, I may just be better off getting a Bosch.

On another note, is there any way the P0130 code could be anything but the front O2 sensor?

I am a boat mechanic by trade, and work on my own stuff. But boats don't have O2 sensors?!!? So I am a little lost when it comes to emissions systems.

I appreciate the fast replies!

Just a thought... Would a digital multimeter work??

Meters won't really work to good inline have tried it and not had really good success.
But if you want to try the wire colors should bebrown and green/whiteor green/black and green/red. One is the front and one is the rear. But having a hard time finding the legend in the diagram to see which is which.
If you need to I can post a pic of the diagram.
Also check for vaccum leaks.

Thanx for the advice! Forgot about vacuum leaks. Hold off on the diagram for now, I can probably search the web and get it if I need it anyway.

Thanx again!

Let me know how it goes.

RE: 02 Sensor Replacement Problems

Just thought I would let everyone know the outcome of the aftermarket O2 sensor. I drove the car for about 400 miles, checked codes frequently, and it still showed the front O2 sensor was bad. Check engine light was still on as well. I went ahead and bought a new Bosch O2 sensor,($$$$) put it in, and all problems solved!!! Amazing! Check engine light is off, and the car passed emissions with flying colors!

Moral of the story...stay away from aftermarket O2 sensors. Just not worth the aggravation and wasted time. I know, they are a LOT cheaper... but there is a reason for that! Maybe somebody can get them to work...

By the way, the aftermarket one I got had the OEM style plug on it, it was not a generic O2 sensor you had to wire yourself.

Thanx everyone for the help! Problem solved. Gotta love it.
