1998 S70, Fuel Problem

I own a 1998 S70 and am new to Volvo Forum. Vehicle just stopped running, believed it was a fuel pump problem. Fuel pump replaced (used fuel pump), vehicle will run while in Park, neutral, or reverse? Place it in drive, vehicle quits (blows fuel injector fuse only?) Have tried 30amp fuse, blows it as well?

  1. Is this NA or Turbo?
  2. Exactly what fuse (number) is blowing?
  3. Did you by chance bypass any relays?
  4. Never up the current rating on a fuse unless you want to find the short by letting the magic smoke out...

Non Turbo and 10Amp fuse is blowing. No relays have been bypassed. Only work done was replace fuel pump. Runs fine until you put it in drive?

I meant "number" as in reference number...

S70 Fuel/fuse problem

Responding to question asking for fuse number. It is #2 10AMP Injectors.
Thanks,

Thanks,

OK, I was a bit confused because fuse #2 (according to my S70 owners and shop manual) is for central locking and driving mode selectors (auto trans).

The fuel injection fuse is referred to as #11 in both manuals; so i was starting to think you were confused but then i went out to my S70 and popped the Relay/Main Fuse Box and fuse 11 is the 2nd one from the front, but better yet, on the Relay/Main Fuse Box cover it's labeled as fuse #2! So someone f***** up the documentation on that one.

Back to your problem; am assuming you have 20 valve 168 HP NA engine, which means you don't have the Fenix fuel injection system. With that assumption, and according to my shop manual you have the following being fed by that fuse:
  1. the 5 fuel injectors
  2. IAC valve
  3. MAF sensor
I would start by pulling the plug on the MAF (should still run w/o MAF plugged in, but will set code) and see if that keeps the fuse from blowing.

1998 S70 Fuel Problem

Did as you suggested with the MAF sensor. No change, continues to blow fuse when placed in drive. Note* I own the vehicle but I'm not doing the work. Shop doesn't work on a lot of Volvo's. This issue has everyone I've talked to "stumped"! I do appreciate your assistance.

And after given the above info this shop doesn't know what to try next?

If it were me I would unplug the other items, one at a time, to see if that changes anything. BTW; this failure mode doesn't make much sense; i.e. why does putting it in drive cause an overload on any of these circuits? I would be more inclined to look for a wire harness that's worn through sitting on top of the shifter mechanism.
