1998 S70 N/A Fuel Pump Issue
 

I am having an issue with my 98 S70 N/A. The car will sputter out and die while driving like its not getting any fuel to the engine. Once the car dies it will not start again for about an hour or so. When trying to start the car after it dies the fuel pump does not turn on but after the car sits with the keys out it will start up and run fine until it decides to have the same problem and leave me on the side of the road.

I have replaced the MAF (had a code from the ECU), the fuel pump fuse (in the main fuse box), the fuel pump relay (Fuse #103) and also the fuel pump itself. The issue has a mind of its own on when it wants to occur. I can't do anything to recreate the problem while I have the car home in the garage. I have tried to cycle the key from the off and on to see if I can hear if the fuel pump comes on which it does every time, I can drive it without any issues until it starts to sputter, choke out and die. Once this happens the fuel pump does not turn back on until the car sits for some time.

Any ideas? Please help!!

Have you replaced the fuel filter? You might also want to check the fuel regulator by the fuel rail. Hope this helps.

When it dies have you tried bypassing the fuel pump relay? There's a good tutorial for troubleshooting this problem in 850 section ('98 MY S/V70 has same mechanicals as '94-97 850 for most part); i would ck that out.

Were new parts put in or are we dealing with stuff from JY?

Yes you should replace fuel filter if it's due too.

Ultimately you may need to drive it with test light attached to fuel pump wires at tank and fuel pressure gauge attached to rail; either you are loosing electrical pwr to pump, or pump itself is dying.

Technically it could be fuel pressure regulator but usually that either works or doesn't; never seen one have intermittent problem but I suppose it's possible.

I used to have that same problem with an old Mustang GT 5.0,it was fuel pump related,as soon as the car cool down it would start,but when warm it would shut down.
