98’ s70 t5 manual/ car will not accelerate past 2.5k rpms

Hi i have a 1998 volvo s70 t5 manual with 113k miles! I am second owner and purchased the car from auction with 110k miles. I did timing belt and water pump service after purchase. 2 days ago i was driving and i acclerated to about 2.5k rpms when the car started jerking really bad and wouldnt drive past 2.5k rpms! It feels like the car is dying of air or fuel! I cant hear anything odd about the car when it idles or drives! I also noticed the car has aftermarket “white fuel injectors”! If anyone has had this issue before or can redirect me please do so! Thank you

Is the check engine light on? if so get the codes read and we can go from there. If it is not on try unplugging the MAF sensor. It is on the air intake hose toward the firewall near the air filter box. Once unplugged it will set the check engine light, but if the car runs better, you have a bad MAF. Do a search about the MAF on this forum for more info

Sorry for late reply! I unplugged the MAF and car will not start! Check engine was present. I plugged it back in and the car drove fine!? Should i still be worried i ordered a new MAF just in case! Also check engine disappeared

Sounds like the MAF may be (or at least part) of the problem. Once the new one arrives put it in and we can go from there.

did you check the hoses from the turbo to the intercooler and onto the throttle body?

FromTheFar 12-15-2018 12:19 AM

Yes i checked all hoses and everything seems to be intact and ok! But i just noticed my idle when i start up the car is very weird! It usually idles at 900 rpms but seems to jump a little, like from 900 to 970!

Was it running fine before you changed the timing belt? If so, are you ABSOLUTELY sure it is not off by one tooth? When is the last time the car had a full tune up? If it has been awhile I would put in new plugs, plug wires, air and fuel filter, Distributor cap and rotor and possibly a new coil. All that should run about $120 or so and will give you a solid foundation to work with.

I replaced cap and rotor, plugs! Took it for a drive and around 80mph full throttle car started misfiring again! Im going to change the oem bosch ignition coil to MSD and see if that helps

Psaboic 02-18-2019 08:09 PM

Sounds like it could be either a weak coil or a weak fuel pump....or clogged air or fuel filter.

FromTheFar 02-19-2019 09:37 PM

Fuel pump and filter is next! I have IPD’s aftermarket filter which installed a month ago! I was thinking replacing coil packs too but oddly enough the 98 model does not come with coil packs! Looks like fuel pump/filter is my last hope!

Psaboic 02-19-2019 11:10 PM

98 models come with a single coil that can be replaced......

FromTheFar 02-20-2019 02:01 AM

Thought you were referring to coils PACKS! but yes i replaced coil

Psaboic 02-20-2019 08:36 AM

Ok, sounds like a fuel or air flow issue........may have asked earlier, but do you get any check engine lights? Only other wild ass guess I could think of is a partially clogged catalytic converter or exhaust.....

FromTheFar 02-20-2019 04:58 PM

Yes but only think showing up from check engine is misfire in cylinder 2,3,and 5! And random misfire detected. Im going to check out the spark plugs today see if they are still good!

Psaboic 02-21-2019 08:31 AM

We had almost the exact same issue with our S70 a year or so ago. I ended up changing the plugs, plug wires, coil, cap, and rotor and it finally went away. Sounds like you have also changed just about everything, but have you changed the plug wires?

FromTheFar 03-19-2019 07:38 PM

I was going the performance route! But looks like i might be selling the car soon... i changed the fuel pump today too and the car is still misfiring! Im going to do a diagnostic check hopefully i find the problem!

The 98's are cheap and simple, so whatever the problem, it wouldn't be difficult to fix if you just knew what it was. If it misfires, then you don't have a clear indication of a lot of things via onboard diagnostics, unfortunately. It would be nice to know if it's going lean at high load, indicating a fuel delivery problem, or rich at high boost, indicating that your air is leaking out of the plumbing downstream of the turbo.

I hope you figure it out.

I also drive a 98 T5M. If you do give up on it, I am sure somebody else will take up the battle and have fun with it. I wish you were closer, I'd take it over.

BTW, I have a set of orange injectors (stock) if you want to try swapping out for the whites. IM me if interested

Shes running!!!

Alright folks she up and running! Changed the O2 sensors and misfire disappeared. Buuutttt i have a bad acceleration sensor so that should be the final issue!

mt6127 08-16-2019 08:50 AM

acceleration sensor? are you referring to the MAP sensor?
