98 S70 T5 intake rattle

Hi, I'm new to this forum, but not to Volvos. I recently bought a 98 S70 T5 with 206k on it. Second owner, clean, seems to have been well maintained. I've noticed that sometimes on start up there is a buzz, or rattle. It appears to be coming from a cylinder, for lack of a better word, in front of the left wheel well. It has a small, maybe 1" diameter hose going to the air filter. I haven't tried taking it apart because I wasn't sure what I was looking at. Is there some sort of check valve or something in there that would need replacement? My 99 V70 with no turbo doesn't have it so I assume it's turbo related?

That is the air pump they are known to go bad.
If they work normally it sounds almost like a hair dryer. If it sounds different it might be going bad.

Thanks for your prompt response! I'll have to listen to it more carefully. Is it supposed to turn on at start up? I don't notice it every time.

Yes it is. It routes hot air from the exhaust into the intake through the air box to help the motor warm up quicker.
